Both C and Si are group IV chemical elements. Both elements can crystallize into diamond cubic solids (Fig. 1.34 in the lecture notes), known as diamond and alpha- Silicon, respectively. Although they share similar valence structures and crystalline structures, they have very distinctive mechanical and thermal properties. Please compare these properties, and briefly explain the reason from the viewpoint of their materials structures.
