The main emphases in the creation account in Genesis 1-2 is that God is the creator of everything. He is the source of all life and he created them with his light. Genesis 1-2 sets the basis for how everything was created in over the course of six days. It focused on how everything was created with a purpose and order. Every living thing served a purpose and was able to live in harmony with no issues in the beginning. It also focused on the theme of purity. Before Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge everything and everyone was so innocent and pure. Things did not change until after they disobeyed God. The creation account also put emphases on how God rested on the seventh day. He was satisfied with all the work he had done, and he was able to rest and take in everything he created. God felt he did a very good job.

The main theme is creation. Genesis1-2 is the beginning of everything. These emphases suggest that God is eternal. It suggests that God is the creator of everything, and no one should be held to a higher regard than him. He created man in his own image so we can relate to him and look to him since he created us. We exist because he exists, and he created us to his liking. This means that that we did not evolve from any other animals. We were made intentionally with purpose and love.

The main emphases in the creation account were that God made the earth in six days and on the seventh he rested, that He created all things including humanity which was his most precious creation. He commanded Adam to Multiply and replenish the earth but in order for that to be fulfilled he needed to have a companion where God put him to deep sleep and created a woman out of him. Another emphases was the freedom that God gave Adam to eat from any fruit of any tree except the Tree of knowledge of good and evil.

These emphases suggest that God is a God of order and he plans everything for a purpose. A very loving God that sees great things on what he creates as in Chapter one it was always mentioned that when each day of the creation passed by he said “it was good” especially when he mentioned he wanted to create man to his likeness and made him have dominance over every living creature on earth. Basically saying Man should like God where they have the command over every living thing, a test to see how obedient they can be by following orders like not eating from the tree of knowledge.

Review the following scenario of Emily and consider the potential consequences for companies where stories like hers (or worse) are commonplace:

Shortly after graduating from college, Emily Evans started a new job in an office downtown. After Emily spent the first few days completing paperwork and getting familiar with the layout of the company, a colleague who worked in the same position began acting as her mentor, explaining the expectations and guiding her on how to perform her job. After a few weeks, Emily felt comfortable with her job and expressed her enthusiasm to her mentor, who only responded with a feigned smile. After a few months, Emily had a general sense of other teams’ responsibilities and she felt comfortable in her own position, which was a good thing because her mentor had left for another company. After a year, she had a solid understanding of the entire company’s objectives because she periodically worked with other teams; however, she started to become dissatisfied with the working environment and the lack of opportunities for her to grow within the company. After two years of being stuck in the same position, Emily became a mentor for a new recruit. When he told her how excited he was to start his new position, she could only return that same expression that was given to her 2 years prior. Emily realized the significance of her reaction and began updating her résumé the next day.

Assignment Overview

Improving one’s presentation skills includes learning how to design good visual aids. Chapter 12 is a great resource for you to use in preparing your slides as well as planning the presentation they will be used with later on this semester. It’s important for you to take this WI assignment seriously. Being able to prepare “good” slides is more difficult than many realize. Google “Death by PowerPoint” for a good laugh and to see what not to do.

Guidelines

Prepare PowerPoint slides to accompany your eight-minute video presentation; you can safely assume your audience will be a friendly audience (Figure 12.2). Choose one of he topics from the list on page 390 (12.14). Read Chapter 12 paying careful attention to pages 371 – 379, page 364, and Figures 12.2, 12.4, 12.9, 12.10, 12.11, and 12.12. Apply content learned from Chapter 12 by following these guidelines:

Incorporate visual appeal and make sure everything is readable at a glance. Your slides should have visual appeal, but you don’t have to incorporate something on every slide. Fonts used on images you include should be readable at a glance, and there should be appropriate contrast between your content and the background.

Prepare a minimum of eight slides:

  • Title slide. Capitalize all major words and make sure to include your name.
  • Overview slide. This slide should show your audience the main points your presentation will cover in concise bullet form.
  • Written content slide (minimum of 4). Content slide titles should be titled similar to the corresponding main point on the overview slide and should follow the order shown on your overview slide.
  • Conclusion slide followed with citation slide. The conclusion slide may repeat main points from the overview or show a take away point.

Follow the 6×6 rule. This is a big one! These slides are going to accompany a live presentation; therefore, there should be *no more than six words per bulleted point and no more than six bullets per slide. ONLY one slide may be an exception IF you want to incorporate a quote or definition on a separate slide, but even then you should still strive to keep it short. When counting the words per bullet point, I consider several words that refer to one thing (The New York Times) as one word.

Use parallelism. This is a big one; review page 74 first! Bullet points should have a common ring to them (aka balance) on your content slides.

Proofread and be consistent. Use proper punctuation, grammar, capitalization, and spelling. Check for typos and odd spaces. Follow the same style throughout. Be consistent with capitalization of slide titles and with content in bullet points. Be consistent with use of end punctuation or no end punctuation of bullet points.

David and Amy are brother-and-sister and live in Boca Raton, Florida. David is a writer, working on his first book. He had been employed as a police officer in Delray Beach, but left the force after being shot in the line of duty. As a result of the shooting, David is paralyzed from his waist down, and now uses a wheelchair.

Amy is an event planner, having earned her degree in Event Management from Lynn University. She worked for Boca’s Best Party Planners, Inc. for two years, but lost her job when the company went bankrupt. She has an interview set up on Friday with Big Haas Country Club for their open event manager position.

On Friday, David and Amy go their ways – David heads to the new Italian Yummy restaurant to meet a friend, Amy goes to her interview.

When David arrives at Italian Yummy, he is shocked to see that all of the tables are high, bar-top tables. He asks Jerry Jerk, the manager, if there is a low table that he can use, accounting for his wheelchair. “Sorry, pal,” Jerk responds, “we feel badly about it, but we just don’t have any low tables. Don’t get many guys in wheelchairs in here, ya know, so we don’t really bother.”

Amy’s interview actually goes worse than Adam’s attempt at lunch. Amy thinks that her interview with Barry Bigot is going quite well, as she determines that she is clearly well-qualified for this job. Suddenly, Bigot looks up from Amy’s resume and says, “Oh, wait, you went to Solomon Schechter Hebrew High School. You’re Jewish? Sorry, but we don’t hire any Jews. Thanks for coming in.”

Write a report giving the following for each of these cases:

1) Providing a complete overview of ADA and Civil Rights Act, including research, using scholarly journals to assist in the full presentation of the laws;

2) Providing full research (Lexis/Nexis will be useful to you, as discussed in class) into at least three cases similar to cases at hand, critically evaluating and selecting only the three most relevant cases;

Module 4.1: Direct Approach

In memos, letters, or emails, you have to organize your writing so that it efficiently communicates your message. Usually, the direct approach is most effective.

In the direct approach, you present your main idea first (See pages 59-60 for a review).

Main Idea First: To save time and prioritize, business readers usually want to to know your main point immediately, so explain your purpose for writing in the first few lines to let them know why they should keep reading.

The textbook divides common message types into requests and replies:

  • Requests for information or reader action should begin with the main idea that the writer is communicating to the reader — a brief statement of the request.
  • Replies answer requests for information or action. Always include a clear and specific subject line, and open by reminding the reader of their original request to you. Openings might include: “As you requested…”, or “In response to your request…”. If the requester wrote several people or some time ago, they may not immediately remember why they wrote to you.

Now, please review the examples:

  • Direct Replies in Figure 7.5 in the text
  • Direct Request, Figure 7.1 and 7.2 in the text

Details Follow: The middle paragraphs provide specific details, facts, and figures, and develop the idea further. Ensure you provide all the details the reader needs to understand your message and to make an appropriate decision. Prioritize details and present the most important ones first.

Use graphic highlighting, such as lists, headings, etc., to emphasize important information. Make your document easy to scan, but don’t just note ideas in point-form. Most paragraphs should offer thoughts in complete, coherent sentences, and lists should have a proper lead-in.

Finally, Action: This last paragraph describes the next step to be taken by the reader. If you want a specific action taken, state exactly what that action is, when it needs to be done and why. People are more likely to comply if given a deadline and logical reasons for the deadline and/or action, especially if those reasons are benefits to them (yes, the “you approach” again!).

If you don’t require your reader to take specific action, you can finish with an invitation for feedback or questions. These conventional endings aren’t required, but provide closure and convenient contact information for questions or clarification.

Personalize your ending with specific details. Don’t use a generic closing expression. Avoid cliched, over-used, or old-fashioned phrases like “feel free”, or “at your earliest convenience”.

  • “Please contact me at yourname@email.com or (123)456-7890 if you have any questions about the implementation of Project X.”
  • “Please contact me before our next project meeting on Friday if you have any proposed changes to this budget or need further details.”
