QUESTION

Respond to this post:

Moore and Kreth’s characterization of the workplace as inherently political resonates with certain aspects of rhetorical theory, particularly the role of language and communication in power dynamics. From a rhetorical perspective, scholars such as Kenneth Burke and Michel Foucault have explored how language and discourse shape social relations and influence power structures.

Kenneth Burke’s concept of “identification” is relevant to understanding Moore and Kreth’s QUESTION of the political nature of the workplace. Burke argues that individuals use language to create and negotiate their identities, values, and beliefs and that persuasion occurs through the identification of shared experiences and interests (Burke, 2020, p.1269). Employees and managers engage in persuasive communication to advance their agendas and interests in the workplace, often leveraging language and discourse to establish connections and exert influence.

Similarly, Michel Foucault’s theories on power and discourse shed light on the complex political dynamics within organizations. Foucault argues that power operates through discursive practices that shape and regulate behavior and that individuals and institutions use language to exercise power and control (Foucault, 2020, pp. 1450, 1453). The term ‘discursive practices’ relates to spoken or written language ranging from everyday interactions to institutional practices like an institution’s established norms and procedures. Basically, it is a fancy synonym of discourse. In the workplace, power relations are negotiated through communication practices, with specific individuals or groups exerting influence through their ability to shape discourse and control the flow of information. I have included a video link in the references that explains Michel Foucault’s theories if you still need help understanding his ideas.

With these theoretical perspectives in mind, I agree with Moore and Kreth’s assertion that the workplace is inherently political. Communication in the workplace is not simply about conveying information or solving problems through persuasion; it is also about navigating complex power dynamics and negotiating competing interests. I have seen teachers turn on teachers to get a leg up with the administration or essentially ‘play the game’ of telling their bosses what they want to hear to get in favor. As Moore and Kreth suggest, technical communicators play an essential role in this process as communication strategists who must navigate and shape political situations to achieve their goals.

However, it is crucial to recognize that the extent to which the workplace is perceived as political may vary depending on factors such as organizational culture, power structures, and individual experiences. I have noticed this in my career after working in several schools and under many different administrators.

M&M Case Study: Break-Even Analysis

QUESTION

M&M Case Study: Break-Even Analysis

This exercise provides you the opportunity to apply break-even analysis concepts and Excel skills to a case study problem. The activity continues our work with Mars Inc. M&M candies.

Assignment

Your company is a wholesaler of Mars candies, and you are responsible for the M&M product line. Mars has given you some pricing forecast data concerning 2022 product prices and payment terms. You need to determine the break-even points for your facility based on the information detailed below.

Plain M&M Analysis: You have identified the following 2022 price points on cases of Plain M&M candies from five different suppliers (variable costs)

Supplier A: 48-count 1.74 oz bags will have a cost of $15.91 per case

Supplier B: 48-count 1.74 oz bags will have a cost of $14.75 per case

Supplier C: 48-count 1.74 oz bags will have a cost of $15.00 per case

Supplier D: 48-count 1.74 oz bags will have a cost of $14.91 per case

Supplier E: 48-count 1.74 oz bags will have a cost of $15.65 per case

Your additional costs are below:

Fixed costs for your warehouse are $4,500,000 annually

The selling price per case is $32.99

Labor costs (variable cost) for the warehouse are $7.57 per case

Marketing costs (variable cost) for the candy are $3.00 per case

Assignment:

Part #1: You need to analyze the break-even point for each of the listed supplier options (** Hint-You will need to calculate five break-even points).

In the Excel document for this assignment, there are five tabs named “Part #1 Supplier A” through “Part #1 Supplier E”.  Each tab represents one of the five payment options.  Complete the indicated break-even analysis by filling in the indicated columns, cells, and graphs.  Remember, every chart must have a title, axis labels, axis titles, and a legend.

Determine the supplier option that results in the lowest break-even point based on the number of cases and dollars (** Hint it should be the same price point option for both the number of cases and dollars).   Complete the information on the “Conclusions” tab for Part #1.

Part #2: The market has changed. Your VP of sales indicates that the market will support a

$36.00 per case selling price. To accomplish this, however, marketing costs will need to be increased by 35%. You need to analyze the break-even point for the option you selected with the lowest break-even point in Part #1.  Use the “Part #2” tab in the document for your analysis.  Complete the information on the “Conclusion” tab for Part #2.

Part #3 Finally, answer the question on the “Conclusions” tab for Part #3.

Creating Graphs Using Excel

You are encouraged to use Excel to create the graphs required for the labs 4 and 8 assignments. The ability to create graphs is a useful skill to have!

All UMGC students have access to Excel. See this page for information: https://www.umgc.edu/help/help-article-base.html?k…

Resources:

There are many good Excel Tutorials online, especially on YouTube, that you can use if you need help creating graphs.

Here is one suggestion (may be slightly different depending on the version used you can stop at minute 4:30 equation for trend line not needed): How to make a scientific graph in Excel

Microsoft Office 365 Training site, click on Excel, and Charts:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/training?redir…

A Few Tips:

Scatter plots or bar graphs work well for the data you need to plot in labs 4 and 8.

Before you start, think about how you want the graph to look. Make sure your graph provides enough information so that the reader can understand the data presented just by looking at the graph.

The independent variable should always be on the x-axis and the dependent variable should always be on the y-axis.

Label the x and y axis, include the units of measure.

Include a descriptive title for your graph.

You are required to create graphs in this lab assignment.

The originality of your lab assignment will be checked with Turnitin. Please review the originality report, and if needed, submit a revised assignment before the submission deadline.

Trauma response

Question

The early life experiences that were explained in Dolores’ case show a concerning picture of the well-being and development of her children, Johnny and Angela. It is understood that “neglect, chaos, attachment disruptions and traumatic stress all impact the development of the brain, and result in complicated and heterogeneous functional presentations in children, youth and adults” (Perry & Dobson, ND). Through Dolores’s story, we can see various moments of chaos, neglect and stress which could have created multiple effects on the children.

To start, Johnny’s speech delay and observable developmental delays could be seen as manifestations of the stressful and unstable environment in which he is growing up. Extensive research underscores the pivotal role of early childhood experiences in shaping neural connections and developmental trajectories (Perry & Dobson, ND). Johnny’s exposure to neglect, inconsistent caregiving, and traumatic events, such as witnessing his mother yelling and experiencing the intrusive behaviour of the aunt, could have made a significant impact on his cognitive and socio-emotional development.

Angela, although she seems on a typical cognitive developmental track, faces her own set of challenges due to the isolation within her home environment. Social interaction with peers is foundational for a child’s acquisition of social skills, and the limited exposure to such interactions can hinder Angela’s ability to develop crucial interpersonal competencies. Moreover, witnessing the volatile interactions between her mother and aunt may shape Angela’s understanding of healthy relationships and emotional regulation, which may potentially influence her social and emotional well-being in the long run.

The overall household environment, marked by neglect, squalor, and a lack of consistent caregiving, creates an atmosphere that can contribute to toxic stress for both children. For human brains, usually the secretion of stress hormones adrenalin and cortisol, in response to an acutely threatening event promotes and improves memory so that the individual can stay out of trouble in other future predicaments. However, when stress is repeated over many weeks, as can be seen in this story, neurons can be impacted fear can be enhanced and bigger problems can occur (McEwen, 2004) In this case it is essential to address their immediate environmental concerns, but the intervention strategies must go beyond that. There must be an established stable, nurturing, and supportive environment in addition to targeted interventions to address Johnny’s developmental delays and efforts to enhance Angela’s social interactions. Finally, a holistic approach that integrates mental health support, parenting education, and community resources is critical in mitigating the potential long-term effects of their challenging early life experiences.(Billie)

Organizational Structure, Systems, and Implementation – Discussion Question

QUESTION – QUESTION

Organizational Structure, Systems, and Implementation

In this module, we explore strategy execution and learn that strategy formulation and strategy implementation cannot be separated. Strategy implementation considers broad organizational concepts such as organizational design and behavior as well as human resource management. We will also utilize a strategic viewpoint to focus on strategy implementation from a front-line perspective, particularly considering organizational structure and management systems. We will continue to learn about organizational resources and capabilities because they form the foundation from which strategy can be implemented.

Discussion Question

Question Requirements:

Read Case 6: BP: Organizational Structure and Management Systems (R.M. Grant, Contemporary Strategy Analysis, 11th ed. Wiley, 2022).

Remember that a case study is a puzzle to be solved, so before reading and discussing the specific case questions below, develop your proposed solution by following these steps:

Read the case study to identify the key issues and underlying issues. These issues are the principles and concepts of the course module which apply to the situation described in the case study.

Record the facts from the case study which are relevant to the principles and concepts of the module. The case may have extraneous information not relevant to the current course module. Your ability to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant information is an important aspect of case analysis, as it will inform the focus of your answers.

Describe in some detail the actions that would address or correct the situation.

Complete this initial analysis and then read the discussion questions. Typically, you will already have the answers to the questions but with a broader consideration. At this point, you can add the details and/or analytical tools required to solve the case.

The disastrous explosions at BP’s Texas City refinery and its Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico have drawn attention to the organizational structure and management system created at BP by former CEO John Browne.

Discuss the role that specialization with coordination and cooperation played in the BP disaster? Provide examples of organizational capabilities that could have facilitated this process.

What structure is used in your organization and is this model appropriate to the industry in which you work?  Why or Why not?

Directions:

Discuss the concepts, principles, and theories from your textbook. Cite your textbooks and cite any other sources.

Your initial post should address all components of the question with a 600 word limit.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the processes of strategy execution.

Reconcile specialization with coordination and cooperation.

Identify organizational capabilities needed to implement strategy.

Examine types of structures and systems and how they are suited to particular contexts.

NURS 430 XU Preventing Malaria in Our Community Presentation

Question

Global Health Case Study

Objective:

Create a PowerPoint or another interactive technology that will suffice of 5-7 slides. You will use the questions below to guide your presentation. Provide your Case Study on Slide 1, then answer the questions below and add your references on the final slide.

Case Study:

You are a community health nurse stationed in a small village in Africa, near the equator. Your nursing station outpost provides the only reliable modern health care in the tropical remote area. Although you have been accepted into the community and the clinic services are free, you have noticed that many people put off seeking health care for illnesses unless they feel too sick to work. Most of the residents work outdoors, typically wearing short sleeves and shorts or skirts. The villagers live in small huts without doors or windows. Many people live together in these small homes; one family even has 13 people ranging from small children to elderly grandparents all under one roof.

A recent outbreak of malaria has occurred. This is the third outbreak of malaria in this village in the past 10 years. Knowing that malaria-infected mosquitoes spread malaria, you embark on a plan to control the outbreak. You ask your funding organization to send malaria drugs that will cure and prevent the disease. In response to the outbreak, the organization that supports your nursing outpost clinic provides not only chemotherapeutic agents for prevention and treatment, but also pesticides for vector reduction and free clothing and mosquito netting that protect vulnerable parts of the body. Workers from the nursing outpost clinic and community volunteers go to the homes of individuals to teach them how to prevent the spread of malaria and to treat new cases.

For information about malaria (how it is spread and its symptoms and treatment), visit the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) website.

Create a presentation for the class that addresses the following concepts:

  • What is the burden of disease of Malaria?
  • Look at the CDC and WHO websites and discuss your findings on patient education for prevention of Malaria. What are some primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention activities that your nursing outpost clinic is providing to control the spread of malaria?
  • Develop a community education project that targets malaria. What are the primary and most significant points that you want to address?
  • Provide two (2) examples of scholarly articles that discuss similar projects or studies. What were their findings? What concepts from this work can you share?

Team Performance Evaluation Tool

QUESTION

Part 1

Write a reflective and applied statement describing how the material from Weeks 1-4 has affected your thought process, personal development, and professional disposition. Consider the following guiding questions:

What challenges have you encountered?

What discoveries have been the most insightful?

Have you discovered a new perspective or new level of understanding?

Have you had any interactions that have had an impact on your learning?

Which concepts are still puzzling or confusing to you?

How does the material from Weeks 1-4 align with your academic or career goals?

Include specific examples and relevant details to explain how the material from previous weeks has changed or influenced your thinking and/or your behavior regarding teams within organizations.

  • Format any citations and references in your reflective statement consistent with APA guidelines.
  • Part 2
  • Refer to the Team Effectiveness Survey Workbook, located in this week’s University Library Resources.
  • Section 3 provides sample survey questions that may help you develop your tool to measure team effectiveness.
  • Section 4 provides additional information about coding a survey.
  • This week you will use the Week 2 assignment to develop a team performance evaluation tool by synthesizing the research findings from the interview you conducted in Week 2. In Week 6, you will use this tool to evaluate functional teams within an organization of your choice.

Note: The tool should serve as a template that can be applied to a wide range of organizations to provide leaders a tangible direction for team success.

First, create your survey objective(s), which you will incorporate as you design the tool. Consider the following:

What will the survey measure?

Who will take the survey?

What are the intended results of the survey?

Now, design a survey with a minimum of 15 questions in Microsoft Excel®.

Incorporate discrete variables in your survey questions. Remember that each question should be limited to only one variable, such as:

Compose 15 questions that are clear, focused, well-reasoned. Remember that each question should support your survey objective(s).

Create a 5-point Likert scale. Consider researching a variety of Likert scales to determine the best type of response anchors for your survey.

Team decision-making

Communication processes and style

  • Leadership performance
  • Incorporate the research findings from the interview you conducted in Week 2.

Ensure your survey is clear and easily readable in Excel.

Finally, write a paragraph summarizing your design process. Use the guiding questions below:

What was your development process?

What benchmark information did you consider prior to designing the evaluation tool? How did you incorporate details from your Week 2 interview and/or your research?

What response anchors did you select and why?

What predictions can you make about the outcome of the survey?

Mathematics Question

QUESTION

Assignment One

Design a binomial experiment you would need three things  (You will need StatCrunch to answer the probability question)

  • The Trial: it should only have two outcomes, such as “heads or tails”, “would I make it to work on time or not”, or “students who pass or fail Math 227”, etc. Also need to decide how many trials you would do.
  • The Theoretical Percentage of Success for each trial: you may not know this, so give me a good, educated guess.
  • What’s the probability of “x times” happening?

My example –

The Trial:  Finding a parking spot in Costco Pacoima, right in front of main entrance on a Sunday. I’m going there 5 times. (“Success” means you found a spot right in front of the main entrance.)

The Theoretical Percentage of Success each trial:    20% (that’s my guess of finding a parking spot in front of the main entrance on any given Sunday.)

What’s the percentage of “Success” all 5 times? So, I do 5 trials n = 5 (total trials), p=0.2 (theoretical probability), x = 5 (how many times I want to see it happen). Using StatCrunch by doing Stat, Calculators, Binomial I get the probability is 0.00032 – which means that my chance of finding a spot to park in front of the main entrance on a Sunday all five times is 3/10000. Your example does not have to include the success in all 5 trials (that was just my random pick). You may do less than the total number of trials.

Assignment TwoInstructions:

You can write your work on paper and attached a pdf file (picture or scan) or you can type your solutions here using the text editor. You will need StatCrunch in order to complete this activity.

Traditionally, when students take Ramos’ Math 227 class at Mission College, about 70% of students in his Statistics courses at LAMC are successful. Suppose 25 students are selected at random from all previous students in this course. What is the probability that “more than” 15 of them will have been successful in the course?

Let’s do a quick overview of the criteria for a binomial experiment to see if this fits.

  • A fixed number of trials – ( what are these in our experiment and how many? )
  • Each trial is independent of the others – ( are all trials independent and why? )
  • There are only two outcomes – ( what are the only two outcomes?)
  • The probability of each outcome remains constant from trial to trial. – ( what is this probability of success ?)
