Critical Article Analysis 1

Question

Critical Article Analysis One

Using the checklist below, you are to evaluate a scholarly article(original research study)published within the last tenyearsthat uses emotional intelligence as the primary topic and utilizes a quantitative statistical analysis as its research design (do not select a mixed methods study or meta-analysis). This is a skill you will need in future classes and in every field of study.

1) Select an empirical, scholarly, peer-reviewed research report of an original study (ask me if you need clarification on any or all of these adjectives).  I suggest you use the PsycInfo or PsycArticles database on UIW library’s website. Be sure that this article is understandable to you. Turn in a copy of the article when you submit the assignment.

2) Answer the questions below for each section, making sure to answer it in relation to the articles you have chosen.  Do not put these answers in paper form, simply provide a heading for each section and then answer the questions in each section in numerical order. No Abstract or Reference Section is necessary for this paper. I do expect a properly formatted title page.

Title and Abstract (Helpful hint: It may help to answer these questions after you have answered the others):

1. Look at the title of the article.  What variables does the title of the article suggest will be examined in this article?

2. Regarding the Abstract: Does the abstract provide an accurate overview of the key points made in the article?  Why/why not?

Introduction:

1. What research problem was studied and why?

2. How does this study propose to go beyond what is already known about this topic?

3. What are the researcher(s)’ hypotheses (what questions do the researchers hope to answer) with this study?

Method:

1. How were the variables of interest (those same variables that should be apparent in the title of the article) manipulated and/or measured?

2. Do you think that the measures used were appropriate for this study?  Why/why not?

Results:

1. Did the researchers provide evidence that any independent variable manipulations were effective?

2. What were the major findings of the study (to the best of your knowledge, in your own words)?

3. Were the researchers’ original hypotheses supported by their observations?

Discussion:

1. What conclusions do the authors draw from this study’s results?

2. What new information does this study provide about the problem under investigation?

3. Do the authors cite any practical and/or theoretical implications of the study’s findings?  If so, what are they?

4. Did the results contradict past research findings?  If so, how do the researchers explain this discrepancy?

5. Finally, how would you evaluate the overall quality of the article.

Question

Background Information

You will use the following example scenario for analysis and your research methodology decision. Note there is very limited detail available This is intentional. Part of the exercise is to consider what additional information you would need to make an informed decision. Nevertheless, you will be asked to make a choice and defend it, so make sure you have strong justification!

Example Scenario

Imagine you are a student in a well-respected DBA program. To meet your graduation requirements, you need to demonstrate your research acumen by completing a research project with a partner organization.

The partner organization you have selected has a serious retention problem.  Even though the company has a strong reputation and pays their employees well above market rates, turnover has been a consistent issue. Despite several major recruiting drives, the company has been unable to back-fill lost employees quickly enough to meet its customers’ demands. This is starting to lead to frustrated customers and lost business.

Your partner organization has asked you to identify the root cause of their retention problem and to recommend a solution. The company is large and complex, with well over 20,000 employees spread throughout the globe. They have provided you with access to all their internal data on this issue, including their HR database with demographic information, training records, employee performance reviews, and the detailed results of the past several years’ worth of employee satisfaction surveys.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Read:
    1. Chapter 5 of Kuhn (1970): The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
    2. Chapters 7 and 8 of Arbnor and Bjerke (2009): Methodology for Creating Business Knowledge
  3. By Day 5 of the workshop, prepare and submit an initial discussion posting responding to the following questions:
    1. Considering the scenario given above, what additional critical information would you like to have before making a decision regarding methodology?
    2. What general methodological approach would you recommend?  (Qualitative, Quantitative, or Mixed Methods).
    3. Why did you choose this methodological approach? Explain and justify your choice.
  4. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Robustly support your arguments and appropriately cite any sources you use. Include a reference list.
  5. By the end of the workshop, you will evaluate two of your classmates’ proposed research methodologies by:
    1. Explaining the tradeoffs inherent with the methodological approach chosen by your classmate.
    2. Suggesting an alternative approach that may be effective for the given scenario.
      1. Explain the advantages of your suggested alternative over your classmate’s proposal.
      2. Note it is not important whether you agree or disagree with your classmate’s proposed approach. Instead, it is important you understand the tradeoffs involved with every methodological choice.

QUESTION

How Starbucks Convinced Indians to Embrace Coffee

In Chapters 8 and 9, we reviewed several types of global expansion strategies a company can undertake when entering new markets. For this assignment, you will read a case study about Starbucks’ expansion into the Indian market (p. 413 in the textbook).

A case study is a puzzle to be solved, so before reading and answering the specific questions, develop your proposed solution by following these five steps:

Read the case study to identify the key issues and underlying issues. These issues are the principles and concepts of the course module, which apply to the situation described in the case study.

Record the facts from the case study which are relevant to the principles and concepts of the module. The case may have extraneous information not relevant to the current module. Your ability to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant information is an important aspect of case analysis, as it will inform the focus of your answers.

Describe in some detail the actions that would address or correct the situation.

  1. Consider how you would support your solution with examples from experience or current real-life examples or cases from textbooks.

Complete this initial analysis and then read the discussion questions. Typically, you will already have the answers to the questions but with a broader consideration. At this point, you can add the details and/or analytical tools required to solve the case.

  1. Respond to, and make decisions, based on the following questions:
  2. What inspired Starbucks to venture into India? What were some of the company’s early concerns and other obstacles?
  3. How would you describe Starbucks’ approach to entering India and how Starbucks was influenced by cultural differences to adapt its offerings for the Indian market?
  4. Why did Starbucks want to enter India through a joint venture? Specifically, what benefits did Starbucks and the Tara Group both gain by partnering with one another? What synergies were present? What conflicts occurred and how were they resolved?

Now, assume the role of the Director of Starbucks’ Indian strategic planning team. You have been tasked to explore the benefits and challenges of expansion into foreign countries through joint-venture partnerships. Describe the opportunities, benefits, and concerns that Starbucks might face by doing so. Summarize the cultural environment, choose an entry strategy from the text, and describe how you would implement this entry strategy. Make sure you are very detailed in your explanation.

Based on the lessons learned from Starbucks case study, what lessons would you apply to those implementing Saudi Vision 2030 as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia embarks on this multi-year strategy to attract multinational corporations?

art exhibition project

QUESTION

If you have not read the PDF of the Sylvan Barnet chapter on writing an exhibition review on the previous page, go back and read that now.

The arts are all forms of communication, so they need audiences. The conventional way visual artists have shared their work is to collect it and put it on display in one or more rooms, using walls, pedestals, the floor, or any manner of framing device. Once a member of the public becomes familiar with the conventions of museum or gallery display, they can begin to evaluate the way particular collections of artworks have been put together for their gaze. In this first Exhibition Review assignment you will take your new knowledge and analytic skills to a local gallery or museum exhibition, and compose an informed review.

Instructions

Select one of the free local exhibitions listed below to attend, then follow these steps:

Take a selfie at the exhibition in front of the title wall to prove you’ve attended.

Take careful notes while walking through. How has the curator organized the space for your gaze and movement? Is there information about the concept of the show or the individual works? Too much information or too little? Note where the curator seems to have put works in conversation with each other. What works stand out or play supporting roles? Consider the lighting, the color of the walls or other staging elements, and the physical relationship you have with the works of art, which has been carefully created for you to experience.

Draft an exhibition review that has the following elements:

  1. A title that engages the reader
  2. An opening paragraph that informs the reader on the premise of the show
  3. A thesis that consists of your argument about the value of the exhibition as a whole (not whether it was good or bad)

Body paragraphs explaining the significance of what is on display (What stands out and why? Are the objects telling a story? Are they rarely seen by the public? etc); QUESTION of the installation, The setting; High points in the exhibition and weaker choices (if there are any);

Question

Read the following case studies and search for the guidelines that answers the specific questions?

Case 1

A 54-year-old woman with chronic pain due to inflammatory arthritis presents to your clinic stating that she is having a “flare” of her arthritis but is out of her Oxycontin® and immediate-release oxycodone. She is aware that it is too early to fill her prescriptions, but she insists that she will be traveling out of state and “really needs” her medications.

Question: How do you Approach This Patient in the community setting?

What is the implications of prescribing this medication? Please provide evidence.

Case 2

A 27-year-old woman on buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone®) for treatment of opioid dependence is admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain due to a perforated gastric ulcer. She received hydromorphone in the ED, and is urgently taken to the operating room. Postoperatively, she is on a patient-controlled analgesic (PCA) pump containing fentanyl. Her last dose of buprenorphine-naloxone was 20 h prior to the surgery; her daily dose is 16 mg.

Question: How can Pain be Managed in Patients who are Taking Buprenorphine-Naloxone? What Adjustments to her Medication Regimen can be Recommended?

Case 3

A 20-year-old man is brought to the emergency department (ED) by his family for evaluation. His family reports that he failed out of school in his second year at a local community college. He admits to escalating struggles with prescription pain pills (prescription opioids), and then heroin use. He appears to be in opioid withdrawal; he describes anorexia and diarrhea, and is yawning and sweating on exam. He has a Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) score of 15, indicating moderate withdrawal. His provider orders clonidine, ondansetron, and 2/0.5 mg sublingual buprenorphine/naloxone, with a plan to observe him in the ED. The provider subsequently receives a concerned call from the hospital pharmacist. Question: The Pharmacist States That the Provider is Unable to Administer Buprenorphine in the ED Without an X-Waivered DEA Number. Is This Accurate?

Case 4

A 23-year-old woman attends an outpatient treatment program and office-based buprenorphine clinic. She has been doing well while maintained on 16 mg/day of buprenorphine. Recently though, she has missed group sessions and provided a urine for drug screening that tested positive for clonazepam and amphetamine. One of the other members in her group reported that they saw a “urine bottle fall out of her purse” as it spilled next to her chair in a group session; her counselor was unaware of this event.

Question: What are the Policies Regarding the use of Illicit Substances or Urine Adulteration or Substitution During Substance Abuse Treatment?

QUESTION

Purpose: This post will be an exercise in finding textual examples of Literary Devices that prove what we are saying about the meaning or overarching theme(s) of the story.

Tasks: 3.1

Part 1. Choose one of the short stories that we have read so far. Remember that “Everything that Rises Must Converge” was only provided as a model; you must choose one of the other stories to write about:

Part 2. Discuss why and how the story connects with one or two of the themes discussed in Unit 1:

  • Love (filial, maternal/paternal, romantic, or platonic)
  • Alienation/Otherness
  • The American Dream/Nightmare
  • The Quest for Identity/Coming of Age
  • Conformity/Rebellion.

  • 3.2
  • Purpose: Further develop your analysis of your chosen short story with a focus on the importance of characterization.Tasks:
  • Part 1. Choose a character from one of the short stories in this unit by Roanhorse, Liu, or Rash. Name the character and briefly describe them, considering some of the following elements:
    • What they are like–how are they described?
    • What we know about their past and present? Consider their relationships, their environment, their position in society, and their culture.
    • What do they want? What are their dreams and goals? What do they fear? What drives them?
    • What do they do? Why? What do we see in the story itself, and what can we infer about them from their behavior?
    • What do they say? What do they leave unsaid? Why?
    • What conflicts do they face–both internal and external–and how do they address these conflicts?

Part 2. Consider how taking the approach of psychoanalytic criticism–focusing on the mind, unconscious motives, and the roots of desire–can enhance our analysis of a short story. Feel free to consult the readings from Mary Klages or Michael Ryan on psychoanalytic criticism to help you make these connections.

  • Part 3. Taking into account all of the above, and reading the Building a Strong Thesis Statementpage for guidance, craft a working thesis for your Unit 3 Essay and include it in bold at the end of your post. This is your opportunity to check your progress towards that essay and get feedback at a critical juncture. The thesis should focus on why and how your chosen story from this unit uses specific symbols, metaphors, uses of irony, or characters to depict one of the themes from Unit 1 (Love, Alienation/Otherness, the American Dream/Nightmare, Quest for Identity/Coming of Age, or Conformity/Rebellion) in a particular way.

LC 1 COMPLETE DISCUSSION

Explain how HRISs are changing how companies manage their compensation and benefit plans.

LC 2 REPLY TO DISCUSSION

Professor/class,

Human Resource Information Systems (HRISs) have significantly impacted how companies manage their compensation and benefit plans by introducing efficiency, accuracy, and strategic decision-making. HRISs automate compensation and benefits processes, reducing manual errors and ensuring accuracy in data management. Automated calculations and systems ensure that employees receive accurate compensation, including salary, bonuses, and benefits. HRISs centralize employee data, including compensation and benefits information, in a single, accessible platform. Centralization facilitates easy retrieval of data, enabling HR professionals to make informed decisions based on real-time information. HRISs streamline the administration of compensation and benefits by providing a unified platform for managing various elements such as salary structures, incentives, and healthcare plans. This streamlining reduces administrative burden, allowing HR teams to focus on more strategic aspects of compensation planning. HRISs offer customization features, allowing companies to tailor compensation and benefit plans to meet the diverse needs of their workforce. Integration between HRISs and payroll systems ensures seamless processing of compensation, benefits, and tax-related information. HRISs revolutionize compensation and benefits management by introducing automation, centralization, customization, and data-driven decision-making, ultimately contributing to more efficient, strategic, and employee-centric HR practices. Thoughts?

LC 3 REPLY TO DISCUSSION

Class,

HRIS can assist Compensation Specialists collect, gather, analyze and develop decision-making tools and reporting for all the required data in Compensation Program Development and Administration.

What data elements do you think the HRIS system should aggregate (as described in the previous sentence) to help Compensation Specialists with their job duties.

My research shows most companies need to collect around 26 separate data elements in the Compensation arena itself, not counting Benefits data elements.

QUESTION

BIOLOGICAL BASIS AND ETHICAL/LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY

Many studies have found that psychotherapy is as effective as psychopharmacology in terms of influencing changes in behaviors, symptoms of anxiety, and changes in mental state. Changes influenced by psychopharmacology can be explained by the biological basis of treatments. But how does psychotherapy achieve these changes? Does psychotherapy share common neuronal pathways with psychopharmacology?

Psychotherapy is used with individuals as well as in groups or families. The idea of discussing confidential information with a patient in front of an audience is probably quite foreign to you. However, in group and family therapy, this is precisely what the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner does. In your role, learning how to provide this type of therapy within the limits of confidentiality is essential.

For this Discussion, you will consider whether psychotherapy also has a biological basis and analyze the ways in which legal and ethical considerations differ in the individual, family, and group therapy settings.

Review this week’s Learning Resources, reflecting on foundational concepts of psychotherapy, biological and social impacts on psychotherapy, and legal and ethical issues across the modalities (individual, family, and group).

Search the Walden Library databases for scholarly, peer-reviewed articles that inform and support your academic perspective on these topics.

BY DAY 3

Post an explanation of whether psychotherapy has a biological basis. Explain how culture, religion, and socioeconomics might influence one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments. Describe how legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy differ from those for individual therapy, and explain how these differences might impact your therapeutic approaches for clients in group, individual, and family therapy. Support your rationale with at least three peer-reviewed, evidence-based sources and explain why each of your supporting sources is considered scholarly. Attach the PDFs of your sources.

Upload a copy of your discussion writing to the draft Turnitin for plagiarism check.  Your faculty holds the academic freedom to not accept your work and grade at a zero if your work is not uploaded as a draft submission to Turnitin as instructed.

6.1 Who Is the Target Customer?

QUESTION

1.

Trend analysts Chris Sanderson and Martin Raymond from the London firm The Future Laboratory say the business of trend analysis is no fortune-telling business.

“We live in uncertain times, but one thing about the future is certain: the business of trend analysis is all about the research of data, its correct interpretation, and to some extent, about intuition.”

View this short video on trend research methodology:

Address what you believe contributes to feelings of consumer uncertainty. Discuss how fashion marketers strategize to overcome the challenges posed by uncertainty.

Be certain to discuss:

how customers have changed using customer segmentation criteria—demographically, geographically, psychographically, and lifestyle and behaviorally

the role of market research and marketing research as a strategy for meeting the challenge posed by uncertainty

2.

In this module, you examined the process that brands follow to segment the general population, and then target one or more specific customer segments.

In this assignment, you will conduct research to discover the main customer segment that is targeted by your selected brand. You will create a target customer profile to describe this customer, using segmentation criteria described in the module.

Remember that your target customer profile must be based on the research you conducted, not based on your personal experience (such as “my friend shops there” or “I buy from the brand”). Conduct research, as described in the module, and make sure that the target segment profile you create represents an actual, viable customer segment.

Create a visual presentation, using visual presentation software, including the following information:

Target Customer Profile:

target customer demographics: Describe the target customer’s age range, gender, educational level, lifestage, income level, occupation or employment, marital status.

target customer geographics: What are the typical locations in which the customer lives? What are the factors in this location that impact the customer’s buying behavior (weather, commuting, etc.)?

target customer psychographics: Describe customer attitudes, and lifestyle behaviors and preferences. What media do they follow?

target customer behaviors and usage: Describe the customers’ shopping behavior for your brand’s category. Do they shop in-store or online? What times of the year do they shop? What are they looking for? Remember to describe behavior in reference to the products sold by your selected brand.

Other than this course target customer group, what other customer segments can be potentially attractive to the brand? Who are they and why do they represent an attractive segment?
