  • Assignment #2(Due Sunday, 36 hours)

During this course, you will complete two writing assignments that will make up the class project. Each assignment will consist of a 2-3 page paper (not including the title page and reference page) that is grammatically sound, free of spelling errors, and formatted according to the current APA edition. Support your conclusions with a minimum of three references. At least two of your references should be articles retrieved from the Hunt Library Research Database.Links to an external site. You can use any other research database for additional sources. Be sure to use current APA format for citations and references. Refer to the evaluation rubric within each assignment for grading guidelines. Your papers will be submitted to the plagiarism detection tool Turnitin.

Your paper will automatically be evaluated through Turnitin when you submit your assignment in this activity. Turnitin is a service that checks your work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a database of web pages, student papers, and articles from academic books and publications. Ensure that your work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarized any material!

—For the first part of the class project, you will research an aircraft accident or incident that occurred as a direct result of any one or a combination of aircraft systems in Modules 1-9. The goal for the first part of the project is for you to critically analyze the aircraft accident and the contributing factors. Part 1 of this project will be submitted during Module 4.

Topic: Korean Air cargo flight 8509

Summary: On December 22, 1999, a Korean Air Cargo Boeing 747 crashed in the United Kingdom shortly after takeoff from London Stansted Airport, killing all four crew members. The incident intensified scrutiny on Korean Air, already facing issues from previous accidents. British investigators identified a chain of failures, including a faulty instrument and a misguided repair attempt, leading to the crash. The crew’s passive response and communication breakdown contributed to the tragedy. Beyond being a cargo plane crash, the incident highlighted Korean Air’s struggle with safety issues.

Rationale: I chose to focus on this accident because a crucial instrument called the altitude indicator, or ADI, wasn’t working properly, and this played a significant role in the catastrophic outcome. It really emphasizes how vital it is for us pilots to have a good handle on our instruments, especially when flying in low-light conditions where we can’t rely on visual cues for the horizon. Essentially, understanding and trusting our instruments becomes paramount for safe navigation, and incidents like these highlight the importance of that awareness.

  • Teacher notes regarding my selected topic: Andres, a very good event to review. Yes, it’s not enough for a pilot to just reference instruments, a good pilot should understand what they represent and be able to cross-check in flight to ensure they are reading correctly. This is a large part of instrument training today. I suggest after you write a review of the event, review the instrument and how it functions as well as how it is used, and then address what it represents and how the pilot may have cross-referenced other instruments to verify and mitigate the accident.                                                                          ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————
