Overview of the Model

          Leininger’s theory of culture care diversity and universality, also the culture care theory (CCT) was developed in the last half of the twentieth century with a focus on culture and care. It has become widely recognized in the nursing domain due to its proven potential to influence the delivery of culturally competent care. The discovery of the theory stemmed from the idea that caring is a universal phenomenon, although it tends to be expressed differently across different cultures (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019). Leininger depicted the theory as the heart and soul of nursing and as an essential component for the development of novel transcultural nursing knowledge and practices. CCT was specifically designed to guide nurse researchers in discovering new meanings, patterns, expressions, and practices related to culture, which directly, or indirectly influence the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

          CCT has been successfully used to guide the provision of culturally congruent care that positively impacts the health and well-being of all. Its application forms the basis for the establishment of a transcultural nursing knowledge framework that will guide the provision of best care practices for future generations. The garnered knowledge can be used by multidisciplinary healthcare providers to transform nursing and healthcare. To date, CCT has successfully guided healthcare practitioners in explicating care meanings such that cultural care values and beliefs can be leveraged to provide a reliable and accurate basis for making culture-specific care decisions and actions (Abualhaija, 2019). It is evident from the theory that practitioners cannot separate an individual’s worldviews, cultural beliefs and practices, and social structure factors from illness, wellness, or health. This is because all the factors are closely interrelated.

Utility of Transcultural Nursing Concepts

Clinical Practice 

          CCT provides a valuable framework that when leveraged in clinical practice, results in notable process and outcome improvements. Practitioners can use the model to guide cultural assessment, with the objective of understanding a patient’s cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values, and developing culturally competent care plans that align with an individual’s cultural context. It also guides practitioners in providing culturally-based tailored patient education to enhance understanding of the selected interventions.

Education 

          The model has been largely used to guide transculturally focused courses. Recent developments include increasing incorporation of the CCT concepts into the nursing curriculum for undergraduates and graduate nursing curricula and programs. This follows the recognition that CCT’s core constructs, such as culturally congruent care and the view of health from the perspective of patients could significantly enhance nursing competence among learners as the basis for providing culturally responsive care (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019). An example includes designing a nursing curriculum that integrates Leininger’s sunrise model in teaching transcultural nursing.

Administration 

          The usefulness of CCT in fostering effective administration and leadership cannot be overstated. This is because such cases involve understanding and working with people from different cultures. Practices should not only be congruent with the changing cultural values but also with the societal and worldwide trends. Practical ways through which the model can be applied in this context include guiding the implementation of initiatives that promote diversity and devising training programs that enhance cultural competence. The model could also provide a basis for the review and modification of organizational policies that align with cultural diversity.

Research

          There is an increased recognition of the importance of undertaking research that is based on a nursing-specific conceptual model, as is the case with the CCT. According to Abualhaija (2019), the model has been used to design research studies and data collection methods that incorporate transcultural concepts. A typical example encompasses designing a research study that explores the impact of culturally tailored interventions on the health outcomes of a particular ethnic group.
