Practice for your evaluation assignment by completing a genre analysis.

According to Dictionary.com, a “genre” is “a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.”

Genres are all about expectations (i.e. conventions). An artistic composition must meet specific conventions in order to “fit” within its category, or genre. For this genre analysis, you’ll be assessing whether the artistic composition of your choosing (This can be a book, movie, song, album, painting, podcast, TV show, etc.) is doing what it’s “supposed to do” within a genre. In other words, does it successfully follow genre conventions? You’ll need to develop three to five conventions for evaluation within the genre that you choose and apply those criteria to your artistic composition.

Does Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” meet the conventions of the country genre?
Does “Shaun of the Dead” meet the conventions of the horror genre?
Is “Die Hard” a Christmas movie?
