Discuss the following quote

Question Description

“There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetuated under the shield of law and in the name

of justice.”

Montesquieu

“If one really wishes to know how justice is administered in a country, one does not question the

policemen, the lawyers, the judges, or the protected members of the middle class. One goes to the

unprotected – those, precisely, who need the law’s protection most! – and listens to their testimony.”

James Baldwin

Question

Please discuss the quotes provided above. Does the mere presence of laws, courts and law

enforcement forces lead to justice in a society? What ideals, principles or methods are vital

in order to provide justice? Please use the definitions and concepts taught during the class in

addition to others. You may also provide examples from your hometown/country as well as

the world.

Instructions

The writing assignments aim at encouraging you to develop an argument and solution on a given

issue by using the specific terms and definitions taught in the class with your own ideas and

sentences. They should be in the form of an essay, with an introduction, main body and

conclusion sections. Written in Times New Roman or Calibri (Font Size 12), double-spaced, its

maximum length will be 3 pages. Referencing other sources (books, academic articles,

newspaper articles, statistical data, etc.) is not compulsory, however, it will help you support

your arguments. If sources are cited or paraphrased, the Chicago or APA style should be used

consistently throughout the text and there should be a references section at the end of the paper.

Last but not least, the writing assignments should follow the grammatical rules and have an

elegant and academic tone.
