Law Question

Question

  1. Itroduction with Quotes
    • Start with the quotes: “If I take the vaccine it will change my DNA” and “The government is always lying to us.”
    • Briefly set the scene where these statements were encountered and your immediate reaction.
  2. Encountering Misconceptions During the Pandemic
    • Discuss the broader context of these encounters during the pandemic.
    • Explain how these experiences highlighted the importance of clear communication and factual information for you.
  3. Realizing a Passion for Advocacy
    • Describe the moment you recognized your skill in advocacy and representation.
    • Connect this realization to your decision to switch majors from sociology to communication studies.
  4. The Shift Towards Law
    • Transition from your reaction to these societal issues to your growing interest in law.
    • Briefly mention your initial career path in pre-medical studies and what specifically about these experiences shifted your focus to law.
  5. Gaining Skills in Communication Studies
    • Summarize how your communication studies equipped you with essential skills for a legal career.
    • Highlight one or two key experiences or skills learned that are particularly relevant to law.
  6. Aspiring Towards a Legal Career
    • Articulate how your unique blend of experiences, including handling misinformation and studying communication, has prepared you for a career in law.
    • Specify what aspects of law you are most interested in and how your past experiences have influenced this interest.
  7. Conclusion
    • Reiterate your commitment to pursuing law as a means to advocate and represent those in need.
    • Conclude with a forward-looking statement, expressing your aspirations and what you hope to contribute to the field of law.

“If I take the vaccine, it will change my DNA,” a patient muttered apprehensively as I prepared another COVID test in the makeshift tent. It was during the Omicron outbreak, and the air was thick with uncertainty and fear. “The government is always lying to us,” another voice added, echoing the pervasive mistrust. There I was, in the heart of a global health crisis, witnessing firsthand the consequences of misinformation and skepticism.

[Shift to Law Amidst Pandemic Challenges]

Initially, my role was straightforward – administering COVID tests to worried patients. However, as the pandemic raged on, my responsibilities evolved. The tent, once just a testing site, became a hub of queries and concerns. People from all walks of life poured in, bringing their anxieties and doubts. I found myself transitioning from a medical task executor to a manager, addressing patient questions, offering guidance, and providing reassurance amidst chaos. Each interaction, each fear allayed, and each myth debunked was a step towards understanding the critical role of clear communication in times of crisis.

[Realization of Advocacy Skills]

In this new role, amidst the confusion and fear, I discovered my innate ability to advocate for others. It was more than just answering questions; it was about being a voice for those overwhelmed by the situation. This realization was pivotal. It prompted me to switch my major to communication studies, where I could refine this ability, learning the nuances of effective communication and advocacy. Through courses in rhetoric and public speaking, I began to see the power of words and the impact they could have when used wisely and compassionately.

[Transition to Law as a Career Path]

As I delved deeper into the art of communication, the path to law became increasingly clear. The skills I was developing – articulating complex information, persuading, advocating – were not just tools for managing a health crisis; they were essential for legal practice. The field of law, with its vast potential to impact lives and society, beckoned me as the arena where I could make the most significant difference. I envisioned a career where I could bring the same sense of clarity and advocacy that I brought to that testing tent to a courtroom or legislative chamber.

[Conclusion]

My journey from a frontline medical worker to an aspiring lawyer might seem unconventional. Yet, each step – from handling COVID tests under a tent to guiding anxious patients, from studying communication to embracing the law – has been a step towards realizing my true calling. As I look forward to law school, I am committed to using my voice to advocate for those in need, to bring clarity where there is confusion, and to be an agent of change in the pursuit of justice. My unique experiences have equipped me with a profound understanding of the power of effective communication and advocacy, tools I am eager to employ in the legal arena.

Research & Summaries Question

QUESTION

THIS ASSIGNMENT SHOULD BE DONE TWICE AS IF TWO DIFFERENT STUDENTS WROTE THEM: (DO NOT WRITE THE QUESTION JUST ANSWER THEM!)

In this thought experiment, we are really going to have a thought experiment. Before beginning, do an internet search or ask AI and define the Anthropocene.

Watch PBS Space Time- What if Humans are NOT Earth’s First Civilization

Questions:

Why did they propose the Silurian Hypothesis? What is the purpose of creating such a hypothesis? (you want to wait for the end of the video, not just take the answer in the beginning).

What will our civilization look like in the future? What will happen to the proof of our civilization? What geophysical process is happening to cause this?

Why is unlikely that we would have stumbled upon the physical remnants of a past civilization? Think about spatially and temporally and relate this to finding fossils of dinosaurs.

  1. Summarize how we trace geologic time with sedimentary rock
  2. How big would our layer be in sedimentary rock?
  3. List some specifics about how we (in the Anthropocene) are going to confuse future geologists and paleologists.
  4. How does the rise in temperature associated with atmospheric carbon influence the geologic record?
  5. What is a hyperthermal and what triggers it?
  6. What is an OAE- ocean anoxic event?
  7. What are we (in the Anthropocene) doing that is hard to explain naturally?
  8. What is the time scale paradox about searching the geologic record for ancient civilization?
  9. ASSIGNMENT 2 SHOULD ALSO BE DONE TWICE AS IF TWO STUDENTS WROTE THEM: (DO NOT WRITE THE QUESTIONS! JUST ANSWER THEM)
  10. Lesson 12: Ecosystems, Biomes, & Soils
  11. Give definitions in your own words for the following biogeochemical cycles: The flow of energy, Carbon cycle, Nitrogen cycle, Oxygen cycle

Humans have extensively modified the biosphere. Your book has several examples or find an example online. Describe and explain a detrimental modification and what it means for the future of the land or species in 1 paragraph.

Briefly define the 5 principal soil-forming factors.

What is soil order? Choose 1 of the 12 soil orders and describe its 2 characteristics and in what climate it can be found.

  1. Lesson 13: Anthropogenic Effects, Geologic Time, & Climate Change

What are oxygen isotopes? What kind of information can scientists get from looking at isotopes?

  1. What is Traditional Ecological Knowledge? What how does this relate to geography and climate change?
  2. Summarize climate change in a 2-3 paragraphs.
How do we determine climates of the past?
What are some causes of climate change?
How do we model future climate change?
Describe at least 1 feedback mechanism that would further increase global temperatures once a warming trend has started.

Lots of climate change information is all doom and gloom. Seems like we always hear about humans making a mess of the climate. Write 1 paragraph about some GOOD things that people are doing for the climate or find an example on the internet about adaption or mitigation and tell me about it.

  1. ASSIGNMENT 3: ONLY DONE ONCE

Data Exercise: Survey Plan

You may either use Google Maps or a topo map to locate an area with no apparent sites or you may make up an imagined landscape to study. Your area should include changes in elevation, level areas and a water source.

  1. Map, draw, or describe through writing the landscape you will be surveying. You have ten crew members. Map out how you will conduct a surface survey by drawing transects on the map or describing how you will be placing your transects.  Indicate how far apart your transects will be. Keep in mind probable site locations and crew endurance.  Should they walk up and down hillsides or follow the terrain? Where should they focus their transects? What were your reasons for placing transects where you did?  Are there areas where sites may have been missed or do you think your crew covered the area well?
  2. To get full credit for this exercise:
  3. Map or describe the landscape you wish to survey.

Indicate on your map or give a written QUESTION of how you will survey this area for sites.

Be specific about how far part, where, and in what direction your transects will go.

Explain why you decided to place your transects as you did and why you think this will help you find sites in the area.

QUESTION

Before completing this week’s discussion, you will need to read the third chapter in How To Listen To Jazz (pp. 51–72) by Ted Gioia. There are some concepts covered in this chapter that you will need to use in order to complete this discussion.

Ted Gioia does a nice job of explaining some of the “inner workings” of jazz. One of the things he talks about in Chapter 3 (“The Structure of Jazz”) can be especially helpful in trying to “demystify” jazz. This isn’t true for all jazz, but a pretty big percentage of jazz tends to follow a pattern like this:

Play the tune, more or less “as is”

Take turns improvising a series of variations based on the harmony/melody of the tune

Play the tune, again, more or less “as is”

Sometimes there is an introduction before the tune or a coda after it. Sometimes there is some other stuff going on in the improvised section(s). But, in general, 80+% of jazz follows something resembling this structure.

With this in mind, I would like you to listen to an example of this. In the 1930s–50s, it was common for jazz musicians to do this exact thing with popular songs of the time. Songs from Broadway musicals, popular songs from other genres, and other (at the time) well-known songs were the “starting point” for a lot of jazz musicians at the time (and still are, today). This is really useful if you know those songs … but quite a lot fo us simply don’t. Chances are, your knowledge of old Cole Porter songs or stuff from 1930s Broadway shows isn’t really all that great (mine isn’t). So, when you hear a jazz band play these songs, and improvise variations on them, a big part of the “puzzle” is missing; the improvised variations lose a lot of their “wow” factor when you don’t know the original song. And, out of tradition, a lot of contemporary jazz performers are still playing a lot of these songs, so going to a modern jazz performance, you might still be a little lost with all of the references to eighty-year-old tunes.

A bit later in this discussion, I will share a jazz version of a song that you might know. It is a version of the song “Blackbird” by The Beatles, performed by the Brad Mehldau Trio, one of the most well-respected groups on the scene today. This version follows the same pattern I laid out at the beginning; first, we hear the original song, then some improvisational material based upon it, then the original song again.

  • (Just in case you are unfamiliar with the original song, here it is):
  • Now, while you listen to the Brad Mehldau Trio version, try to sing along in your head. See if you can keep the original melody of “Blackbird” going even when the band moves on to different things. If you’re able to do it, you should notice that the original song is still “in there,” it’s just being masked by all of the improvisation around it. This is a pretty central idea in jazz, and it helps a lot, I think, to be able to “follow” something like this.
  • I’ll shut up now and let you listen:

Now, for the “discussion” part, I would like you say a few things.

Did you know this song before today (the original)?

If so, were you able to “follow” it once the band started to improvise?

If not, did hearing the original song first help you find something to follow as you listened?

Did anything surprise you as you listened? Did you enjoy the performance?

In How To Listen To Jazz, Ted Gioia describes a common pattern of jazz compositions (and improvised solos) typically unfolding in predictable groups. Specifically, he says something about how “listeners can benefit from trying to conceptualize many jazz performances as an unfolding of …” What does he say, here? (Hint: check out pp. 70–1 toward the end of Chapter 3.)

Did you hear this happening in “Blackbird?”

5 minutes presentation

QUESTION

In this project you will visit a restaurant or grocery store that serves food from a culture that is different from your own. Eat a meal and select the dish that you find most interesting, or purchase one or more prepared food items (frozen or deli style).

Take a picture of the dish. Research the origins of that dish, how it migrated to California and how it (may) have been modified from its original form in the migration. You are encouraged to be creative with your research. You may include interviews, internet and library searches.

Your final product will be a short (5 minute) recorded oral presentation or Sway infographic.

What you will do in this part of the project

In this part of the project you will visit the resturant or ethnic grocery store that you selected and try one or more dishes. Select one dish to focus your presentation on. You will present a short (5 minute) recorded presentation or create a Sway infographic to share with the class that summarizes the dish, its country of origin, its history and your reaction to it. This project is not a restaurant or food critique, it is a summary of a the Geography of a specific dish.

Instructions

Your meal

Meals are more fun with friends. I encourage you to take several friends on this adventure. Be open minded and respectful of the culture you are visiting.

Take notes and pictures

Take notes during your meal or right afterwards. Jot down your impressions of the food, the restaurant decor, and the neighborhood that the restaurant is located in. Take several pictures of your dish (you will need them in your presentation)

Follow up

Google the dish. Look at several different recipes for it. What are the defining ingredients? These might be the primary grain or protein in the dish, or it might be defined by a specific spice or other ingredient.

If possible, try to talk with someone who cooks the dish. You could explain to your server at the restaurant that you are doing a project for a college class and would like to talk with the chef about their dish. See if you can call the restaurant or visit at a later time to chat with the chef. Ask them about how they make their dish and why it is important to them. This is actually pretty easy – chefs love to talk about their food, and it is an opportunity to meet an interesting new person and learn first-hand about the dish!

Your presentation

You have two options to present:

Record a 3-5 minute narrated slideshow (using Google Slides or Power Point) and Studio or another screen capture software of your choice. NOTE: I will stop watching the video after 6 minutes. Material presented in the video after 6 minutes will not be considered in grading.

A Sway or Story Maps infographic

Content of your presentation

You are encouraged to conduct first person interviews and include quotes from your primary sources in your paper.

  • Specifically, your presentation must address:

At least two photos of your dish

  • A QUESTION of the dish

The defining ingredients in the dish

How it is presented

How it is consumed

Note if any of the above have been modified in the dish’s migration to California

The country of origin

  • climate

dominant starches and proteins in the culture’s diet

  • How or when the dish migrated to California (or where ever you are currently located)

How the dish has been modified in its migration

Your overall impressions viewed through your geographer’s cultural lens.

  • Consider who consumes the dish (people from the dish’s source culture? others?)
  • Where or when is it usually consumed? Is this an ”anytime” food, or something specific to a holiday, season or time of day?
  • How is your perception of the culture from where the dish is from shape or inform your feelings about the dish?
  • How you view the dish, and if your perceptions of it changed between your first introduction to it and now.

Con E 101 Book report Fire in the Grove: The Cocoanut Grove Tragedy

QUESTION

Your report should answer the following questions:

    1. WHAT BOOK did you read (give a full bibliographic citation, attach after report as an appendix)?
    2. WHAT HAPPENED in this book? WHAT was built, WHERE, WHEN? Give a short summary of the structure(s)/city part/city and its intended functioning. Also, as part of this answer, explain how the WHAT, WHERE, WHEN of this fire relate to the topics discussed in terms of the different parties of the construction industry (e.g., builders, inspectors, engineers, owners, suppliers) who contributed to the severity of this fire.
    3. WHAT were the most important factors that led to the fire and loss of lives as described in your assigned book? Consider human and social aspects of the decisions made, existing laws/regulations/requirements in place at the time of the fire, business practices, ethics. Additionally, compare and contrast how the factors you discuss in this answer relate to the factors that contributed to the recent fire in Maui, Hawaii in August of 2023.
    4. WHAT were the impacts of the fire described in your assigned book? How did it impact the lives of people at the location where the fire happened? How did it impact the structure of the building, the city/State where it occurred? Similarly, compare and contrast how the impacts you discuss in this answer relate to the impacts that contributed to the recent fire in Maui, Hawaii in August of 2023.
    5. HOW did the built environment influence survival in positive and negative ways? HOW innovative was the design of this particular structure(s), in terms of its methods and/or materials of construction, in terms of its environmental social impacts, and in terms of its use? Did it function in the way in which it was intended?
    6. WHAT lessons did you learn from this book? How do they relate to existing buildings and building codes? How are these lessons used to design, build, and operate current buildings? Develop your answer using the ASCE Code of Ethics (available at https://www.asce.org/career-growth/ethics/code-of-ethicsLinks to an external site.) and explain which areas of the code of ethics were violated by those who contributed to the fire and its aftermath.
    7. Did YOU like this book? Would you recommend it to others? Produce a review of it as an object of entertainment, perhaps using a review of a book in a magazine or newspaper as an example.

Guidelines

Report Format

I expect that you will submit this information in a 5-6 page written report (not counting any front or back matter, see details below). You should use Times New Roman, 12-point font, space-and-a-half, 1-inch margins all around. Number your pages. Spelling, grammar, and presentation will be graded. Also, use the following checklist to make sure your report meet what is expected from this assignment: Checklist Individual Report-CONE101 (pdf)

3 sources and explanation of them

QUESTION

My Topic:  My persuasion article, based on my previous submissions, is about how individual differences in personality and experiences influence a person’s dream content. My purpose of this persuasive article is to push this information and evidence forward so more people will believe in this statement. I hypothesized that a person’s dreams directly correlate to their personality and what they have gone through and experienced in their lifetime. I will price this to an audience with evidence and persuasive writing techniques. This is the thesis I decided on because it leaves a side for people to argue against my findings and use evidence and other opinions to combat the claim I made. People may hypothesize against me and argue that dream content may correlate with different things, such as medications, anxiety, emotions, sleep patterns, or some may argue even external temperature. Based on my findings I believe in my previously stated hypothesis that it is the most affective way to predict dream content. I will include graphics of both people dreaming/sleeping in peace, paired with different charts and graphs that prove my thesis correct. I want to share this information in a persuasive manner by stacking evidence to sway the audience into backing me and believing that the most affective and prominent deciding factor of dream content is based on personality. I want to remain formal to show scientific proof of my thesis in a manner that influences people to believe in expert analysis.

Assignment: Research is a recursive process, meaning that we have to keep returning to it with fresh eyes. Each time we go back, we have new things we are looking for and new understanding of the ideas we’re reading about. At work and at school, as we get further along in a project, we will need more and different research to complete the different phases of the project and we may have revisit sources we already looked at.

As you prepare to write your Unit 3 project, you will see that the research you did in Unit 2 was not enough to complete the project in this unit. There will be things you still don’t quite understand; things you remember reading but can’t find now; questions that come up as you write that you need to answer before continuing.

Task:

For this assignment, I want you to find 3 new sources to use in your Unit 3 project. Importantly, I do not mean any three sources that will just be tacked on to your works cited–but sources that will actually help you. I recommend making an outline of your Unit 3 project (building off of what you wrote for the Working Plan) or even starting a draft of the project and thinking about which sources from your Unit 2 project will help you write each section. Then ask yourself, “Where are the gaps? What kind of information do I still need?” This assignment will help you most if you think about what you still need before you set out to find it.

Once you identify the three NEW sources that you will actually use for Project 3, list each source in MLA format (the complete citation). Then, for each source, write a brief explanation (at least 100 words each) why you are adding that source to your list. Here are some questions to consider as you write your explanation:

Why do you need this source?

What information does it contain that you did not have before?

How does it build on information you already had?

What section or portion of your document will it help you write?

What specific part of source, or what specific information within the source, will you use?

How will this source help you to achieve your rhetorical purpose

DCL 600M Apply Critical Thinking

QUESTION

Your manager Phil visits your office. “I’m meeting with Betty. Would you mind joining us for a minute?”

You grab a notepad and pen and follow him.

“Betty and I have been talking about a serious problem we might be facing. Have you heard about it?”

You explain that you’ve heard some rumors, but don’t know the details.

“We’ve got the legal department involved, but we want to make sure we’re looking at this from all angles. We’re still sorting out the facts ourselves, so we’ll send you the details after this meeting. We need to know what we know and what we don’t know about the situation. Your critical thinking and analytical skills are going to be key for this assignment. Write up an analysis and deliver it to me by the end of the week.”

Step 1: Prepare to Think Critically

Prepare to respond to your boss’s request for an analysis of a problem in your organization. You realize that this will require careful thinking. So, you need to take time to review the process of critical thinking and problem analysis, as well as key habits of master thinkers and ethical decision making.

Step 2: Identify the Problem

Your first task is to figure out how the circumstances resulted in a problem for the organization. Remember the direction from your boss is to “apply your critical thinking and analytical skills to figure out what happened, what we know and don’t know, and how the organization might remedy this situation.”

What is the problem that resulted from the circumstances, and why might there be different interpretations of the facts? Outline the points that you want to make in the first two sections of your paper (introduction and explanation), and draft those sections.

Step 3: Analyze the Information

Now that you have some understanding of the nature of the problem and the parties involved, it’s time to gather and analyze information. The problem analysis resources will aid your analysis and development of the third section of the paper.

Outline the points that you want to make in Section 3: Analysis of the Information, then draft that section.

Step 4: Consider and Analyze Other Viewpoints, Conclusions, and Solutions

nce you have completed your analysis of the incident, the next step is to consider other viewpoints, conclusions, and solutions. To do this, you will need to apply ethical decision making skills. If you missed it earlier, we also recommend that you read Randolph Pherson’s “The Five Habits of the Master Thinker,” a paper written for intelligence analysts, but applicable to all analytical thinking and reasoning.

Outline the points that you want to make in Section 4: Analysis of Alternative Viewpoints, Conclusions, and Solutions, and draft that section of your paper.

Step 5: Develop Well-Reasoned Conclusions

Now that you’ve considered various viewpoints, you’re ready to develop your own personal conclusions and suggest solutions that your boss can bring to leadership in briefing them about the situation.

Remember, you may need to consult outside references, but this is not a research paper. It should be investigative in nature about the facts of the case. Cite any outside sources carefully.

Now, outline your argument and draft Section 5: Conclusions and Recommendations, the final section. Your boss is expecting to receive a concise, focused paper to prepare for further meetings. Stay focused on the main points, although you may have many facts that could be used to answer any questions.

Step 6: Submit Critical Thinking Paper

The final paper should be no more than five double-spaced pages, excluding the cover page and references page(s). Organize the paper in accordance with your preparatory steps, using these subheadings:

Title of Paper (centered and bold) There is no heading named “Introduction”

Explanation of the Issue (centered and bold)

Analysis of the Information (centered and bold)

Consideration of Alternative Viewpoints, Conclusions, and Solutions (centered and bold)

Conclusions and Recommendations (centered and bold)

QUESTION

In the American healthcare system, hospitals and other facilities face two very interrelated issues that appear to have an inverse relationship. These include the quality of care a patient receives and cost effectiveness of the care provided. As retention and staffing issues have greatly damaged the quality of care and overall patient experience, hospitals and other healthcare facilities have had to think outside of the box from clinical and business perspectives to improve patient outcomes and quality of care all the while maintaining cost effective strategies. Reduction of cost is important to these hospitals when overhead is so high. In the following paragraphs I will lay out a few strategies for hospital improvement, both from a quality perspective and a cost perspective.

Quality and cost aren’t always inversely related. In some instances, we can improve patient outcomes while reducing the total cost on the healthcare system. For example, in a study completed by Joo and Liu (2017), patients with chronic illnesses such as heart failure, chronic kidney disease and COPD account for 66% of the healthcare costs within the United States (p. 296). In this systematic review, the authors looked at effective case management as an intervention in respect to hospitalization and rehospitalization. They found that case management transitional care services greatly reduced the number of readmissions and emergency department visits (Jiu & Yoo, 2017). In this example, both the cost to the patient and hospital for readmissions and emergency department visits are reduced, and at the same time, less hospitalizations means an improvement in patient outcomes.

One very exciting and relatively new advent to healthcare is Telehealth. Dickson et al. (2020) explains that “Telehealth may encompass a variety of interactions. For instance, it may involve live videoconferencing between a patient and provider. This “real-time” interaction may substitute for an in-person visit to a clinician and can be used for consultations as well as diagnostic and treatment services” (p. 123). In a study done by Chen et al. (2022), it was also found that on average telehealth users had, more visits per patient per year than those who did not use telehealth (p. 4). Those who criticize telehealth services say that it may increase cost rather than reduce it due to its nature of being an additive service. Though, it can be argued that through increased utilization of primary care via telehealth services, the patients can have more health needs addressed before they become larger, more expensive issues (Chen et al., 2022, p. 4). In addition to potentially improving patient outcomes, I believe utilizing telehealth services will also improve the overall patient experience due to its ease of access in relation to sometimes long wait times in the physician’s office, amount of time it may take to drive to the location, etc.

Finally, optimization of payment when it comes to billing is imperative to not only the improvement of healthcare outcomes through safe staffing, but also the overall patient experience. For example, Austin and Wetle (2016) point out that retention of healthcare professionals has become a major issue due to burnout (p. 75). They also noted that nursing care is not billed separately, but rather part of the daily fee for hospitals (Austin & Wetle, 2016, p. 75). Burnout often occurs when healthcare professionals and, in this case, the nurses in specific, experience a heavy workload in understaffed healthcare settings. If nursing services were to be billed as a separate entity from the standard hospital services, then it could potentially be an eye-opener to hospitals in terms of the sheer demand for nursing services. In this way, the funds could be allocated differently which could lead to improved staffing levels, less burnout and ultimately better patient outcomes and satisfaction.
