Week 4: Common Illnesses and the Use of CAM (graded)

Purpose

The Course Outcome covered this week is CO1.

CO1: Identify theories, concepts, and beliefs related to transcultural nursing. (PO1)

Discussion

We encounter patients after they have explored various avenues of self-help. At times, these avenues involve the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Our readings this week are very helpful.

1. Select a common (or not so common) illness or condition that affects a specific ethnic group.
2. Identify two (2) CAM therapies that patients are likely to try before seeking (or in addition to) allopathic, osteopathic, or ayurvedic medical intervention for the illness or condition.
3. Discuss the effectiveness of each therapy you identified.

Objective

To practice utilizing peer reviewed research to evaluate health claims made in popular press sources.

For this project, I would like for you to find and evaluate an article published in a popular press source that addresses a current topic in nutrition. “Popular press” (aka general interest article) means any article that was NOT published in a research journal. Examples of popular press would be any newspaper, magazine, website, blog, trade magazine, etc. Your article could address a specific food trend, “super food”, supplement system, a specific nutrient and how it impacts health, etc.

**DO NOT CHOOSE TO WRITE ABOUT A FAD DIET (that will be covered in your final paper)

The concept of leadership is addressed at length in chapter two and throughout the textbook. Of equal importance and often not mentioned is the concept of followership. In fact, Bennis, 2006 stated, “In our society leadership is too often seen as an inherently individual phenomenon” and acknowledges that no change can occur without committed and willing follower. Leaders, therefore, can be leaders only if they have followers.

What key leadership characteristics attract followership? Be sure to support your answer with evidence from available literature. Remember to cite your reference.

Substance abuse as a community health problem.

Violence and nursing response.

Read chapters 26 and 27 of the class textbook and review the attached PowerPoint presentations. Once done answer the following questions.

1. Discuss the historical trends and current conceptions of the cause and treatment of substance abuse.
2. Identify and discuss the issues related to substance abuse in various populations encountered in the community health nursing practice.
3. Describe and discuss the concepts of interpersonal and community violence.
4. Describe and discuss the role of the nurse in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of violence. APA format word document, Arial 12 font attached. A minimum of 2 evidence-based references besides the class textbook no older than 5 years must be used.

Leadership Paradox and Inter-team Relations

A. What is the leadership paradox? Give some reasons why a leader can encounter difficulty in newly formed teams or groups using a participative management system. Support your discussion with at least two (2) external sources.

B. Present a discussion of the strategies for encouraging participative management in the workforce, and how to implement each of these strategies. Support your discussion with at least two (2) external sources.

C. What serious biases or misassumptions do groups that are involved in inter-team conflict sometimes experience? How do these biases and prejudices affect the ability of teams to accomplish their goals? Support your discussion with at least two (2) external sources
