This discussion builds on information in the unit introduction and the unit studies. Keep in mind that learning about research is iterative (baby steps, one at a time!) and if you skip steps, you will get lost!

For this discussion, refer to the set of quantitative and qualitative articles provided in this unit’s studies. Choose one topic area that you find interesting. Briefly summarize each article (one paragraph each). Discuss the differences between the quantitative and the qualitative articles with respect to the following questions:

• Sample size. (Which one used a larger sample and why?)
• Data collection. (What methods were used to collect the data? Surveys? Observations? Interviews?)
• Data analysis. (How was the data analyzed? Were statistics used? Were interviews coded?)

There are times in every career when you will have to follow a rule that you disagree with. For criminal justice professionals, these times can be more intense than other fields because lives lay on the line.

For this Journal:

• If you are a current criminal justice professional:
  • Choose a recent policy that you have had to implement but that you personally do not agree with.
• If you are not a current criminal justice professional:
  • Choose a policy that you would be against implementing if you were a current criminal justice professional.
• Describe the policy you selected.
• Explain your personal disagreement with the policy, including why you disagree and whether you disagree ethically or practically.
• Describe how you can/could reconcile or dismiss your own opinions and beliefs regarding policies you do not agree with and continue to perform your job.

This week, we will look at the “art of quoting,” and, as we will every week, some more example readings. Before you proceed further, please read Chapter 3 (pages 43-52), and the example essays on pages 269-295. Other than concept & rhetorical analysis papers from students who have chosen readings due this week (which have separate modules at the bottom of the modules page), all this module will consist of will be discussions of the various readings.
