ENGL 203 Common Place book entry

QUESTION

Write in your Commonplace Book a short (250ish words) reflection considering one of the following topics (or a fascinating topic of your own choice): THE FAERIE QUEENE BOOK 1 CANTO 1-2-3

What connections or contrasts do you see between what Spenser is doing here and earlier chivalric romances like SGGK?

How is Spenser’s “Renaissance medievalism” comparable to Ishiguro’s 21st-century medievalism? What are they each doing with the archaic setting of the medieval past, and how do they each use this distant setting to offer commentary on their own era?

How does the “epic romance” of Spenser so far bring together elements of both epics and medieval romances?

  • What do you notice about how Spenser uses symbolism and allegory to convey his political and religious beliefs?
  • What do you notice about Spenser’s use of supernatural elements, and how do they compare to the presence of the supernatural in earlier readings for this class?

How do characters like Redcrosse Knight, Una, Archimago, and Duessa compare to earlier characters we’ve met in other readings?

Popular Culture and Jamestown History Discussion

QUESTION

Read the Jamestown section of Chapter 2 in The American Yawp. Then watch the following scene  from Terence Malick’s 2006 film about the founding of Jamestown, The New World.  Also read this page about Pocahontas from the actual Jamestown site: The World of Pocahontas

https://www.nps.gov/jame/learn/historyculture/pocahontas-her-life-and-legend.htm

Pocahontas is probably the most widely depicted Native American woman in history.  Very little is known about her, and most of what is known about her comes from John Smith’s own early 17th century account.  She died at the age of 21 in England after marrying Englishman John Rolfe.  In recent years, Former Presiddent Donald Trump has repeatedly used the term “Pocahontas” to refer to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, in an effort to ridicule Warren’s Native American heritage.

What does the person of Pocahontas represent to us as Americans?  What can the facts of her actual life teach us?  How can we honor her memory, given the suffering her people experienced in the years following her short life?

Choose one of the prompts:

How are the impacts of structural inequality and French republican universalism portrayed in La Heine through cinematography and characterization? What are the implications of structural inequality for the social destinies (Siciliano 2007) of men living in the French banlieues?
