MIDTERM ESSAY: CRITICAL PRODUCTION REVIEW OF DESIGN ELEMENTS

For your midterm essay, worth 10 points towards your final grade, please write a thoughtful short essay of about 600 words that addresses the following prompt:

How do the various DESIGN ELEMENTS in either the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS or the Hecht Studio Theatre production of THE MOTHERFU**ER WITH THE HAT help tell the story, set the mood & introduce the audience to the “world of the play”, convey the “message” of the production, etc. (Or, if you feel they do not do that, please describe the elements in question and critically explain why they do not help.)

Please isolate and describe SPECIFIC MOMENTS, SPECIFIC DESIGN CHOICES, etc. related to the SET DESIGN, COSTUME DESIGN, LIGHTING DESIGN, or SOUND DESIGN to answer this portion of the question. You should also incorporate quotations from the readings on WHAT IS DESIGN? to help bolster your discussion.

Please DO NOT REVIEW THE ACTING!!! I would like this paper to focus on the Design elements, rather than the acting.

Pre-Reading: Food Waste in Your Household

We are starting Project 2 this week. This project centers on the subject of food waste.

Step One: Answer the following questions in a journal response about your own experiences.

Part 1:

1. Describe the grocery shopping process in your household? Who does the shopping? Where? How many times a week?
2. What are some of the most common/popular items in your fridge?
3. Which items from your fridge do you find that you end up throwing away most often? Why do you think they are not consumed?
4. How many times a week do you and your family eat out?
5. Do you eat out or eat in more often?

Part 2:

1. What percentage of food do you think the average household wastes? The United States as a whole?
2. Why do you think people end up wasting food?
3. How can we work to waste less food?

In this episode of ‘The Scarlet Letter Reports,’ host Amanda Knox meets Amber Rose, another woman facing the scrutiny by mainstream media due to sexualization. After watching the video, respond to any five (5) of the following questions/ statements as they related to this week’s textbook chapter content:

Does Amber’s experience reinforce or challenge double standards as discussed in the textbook research about women’s sexuality? Consider the textbook research discussion about how culture informs the meanings given to women’ sexuality- how does this apply to Amber’s experiences? Do gender appropriate ideas of signaling interest or agreeing to have sex discussed in the textbook research inform Amber’s experience? Drawing on the textbook research explain how Amber’s situation contributes or challenges to the controlling of women’s sexual arguments in the textbook research? How does the textbook research on heterosexual scripts support or refute the assertions put forth in this video? Will Amber’s re articulation of her image help women to express female desire from an empowered standpoint or does it just provided a false consciousness- explain using the textbook research content?

The attached pdf has all the required details, as well as the two readings that must be analyzed and compared.

Formatting:

– 7 total pages of writing.

– Times New Roman.

– 12 point font.

– Double spaced.

Paper content:

– 1 page (~2 paragraphs) introduction and explanation of the readings

– 4-5 pages of analysis (Answer this for each reading: What does the readings tell you about the author’s beliefs? What does the readings tell you about the culture and society of the author? Religious beliefs of the author? and what parts of the readings give away that information?

– 1-2 pages of comparing and contrasting between the readings (what are some similarities between the authors? what about their society and cultures/religions/beliefs? What are some differences?).

– ~1 page (could be just a paragraph) conclusion (saying that the historical readings can show much more information about the historical period of it if looked at analytically and “reading between the lines” of them).

The first reading is fairly clear, but the second is not entirely clear. If you need explanation on any part of the second reading, let me know. I have already made an analytical analysis on the second reading.

Your essay should use MLA style and be 4-6 pages in length. Your works cited page does not count toward the page total.

Tips to get started:

• Read the texts again. Do you notice anything new on a second read?
• Create a working thesis statement. What is the main claim or idea of your essay?
• Remember that you are entering an academic conversation. What might the texts have to sayabout your main idea, and what might the texts have to say to each other?
• What quotes or ideas from the texts will you use in your essay, and how will you provide contextfor them? Will you need to use academic summary in your essay?
• Remember, your sources should support your ideas as well as connect to each other in someway. The sources might agree or disagree with each other, or they might confirm, reject,elaborate on one another, or emphasize a point. Etc. Show these connections.
• Organize your ideas. You could create an outline, a mind map, or use some other strategy toestablish your main claim and supporting points.
• Be sure to cite your sources.
