• Turn in an outline for your third 2-page essay, and a three-page draft of your six-page research paper (this should be an adaptation of one of your essays, making it into a research paper with cited scholarly sources from the library databases supporting your argument and also providing counterarguments).
• Read the model literature research papers in the models and templates folder (located with the syllabus and lectures in our BlackBoard classroom).

All assignments must be formatted correctly; use MLA standards for font, spacing, and margins. See the website OWL at Purdue and look up MLA format for all of the information you will need in this class. Formatting will be graded!

For discussion, please post and respond to classmates as helpfully as possible as everyone revises during our final days of the term!

Expectations:

I expect you to read the assignments carefully and respond thoughtfully and in interesting ways to the reading and to one another. You should always seek to expand the conversation, and not to end it.

This week you are outlining the final two-page essay (Essay Three), and at this point you should be feeling fairly confident about that process. Do let me know if you have questions about it, though! That will also be the final possible topic for your research paper, and the draft (three pages in length, so onto the fourth “piece of paper” in MLA format) of the research paper is also due at the end of this week.

The model research papers are your reading this week, and I hope they are helpful examples of student writing. Please bring your observations, questions, and any helpful or confusing elements up in this week’s discussion so we can make these examples as useful as possible to your writing process as you draft the research paper this week.

Annotated Bibliography

In this week, you will complete an annotated bibliography for a position paper that will be due in Week 5. Choosing what area you would like to study in addictions begins with examining the following areas related to the course competencies:

• Major psychological theories and principles in the field of addictions
• Historical link to modern issues and trends in the field of addictions
• Current and evolving trends in the field of addictions
• Nature of geographic, social, cognitive, and emotional factors in the development, course, and duration of addictions
• Differences in patterns of addiction in the context of gender and developmental issues
• Illegal and legal substance use issues regarding physical, social, and psychological effects
• Impact of treatment and prevention methods on the incidence, course, and duration of addictive behaviors

Use this as a guide when choosing research articles.

Note: This is a course on psychology. Therefore, the research should relate to addictions but from a psychological perspective and not a purely the medical related discussion on the disorders and conditions.

Choose a topic mentioned above. Using the South University Online Library database (ProQuest or EBSCOHOST), find six journal articles related to the topic. You must use scholarly journals (i.e., peer reviewed articles). You should not use web pages, magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and other books for this assignment. Also, the research articles used must be current (i.e., within the last five years).

Based on your research, create a document that includes:

• A summary for each of the journal articles found. (i.e., 1-2 paragraphs) of the resource (e.g., What were the goals of this article? What conclusions were made? In short, provide enough details so that anyone would be able to understand the general purpose of the article.)
• An analysis and evaluation for each of the journal articles found. (e.g., How does the information in this article correlate with information from the course? How is the information from the article similar/different from the course? WHY? What is the significance of the information from this article? HOW can this information be helpful and meaningful? WHY is this information important? HOW does the information contribute to the field of research?)

SOCIOECONOMIC IDENTITY. How would you describe your socioeconomic identity? How has your family’s social/economic status shaped your self-concept, values, goals, and dreams? What are the benefits of your perceived socioeconomic status? What are the costs/conflicts? How does your socioeconomic identity differ from others? How might your socioeconomic identity affect your interactions as a social worker (or chosen profession) with others of the same/different social/economic classes? What are you going to do to ensure you work effectively with those having a different socioeconomic identity?

Answer each question in a paragraph and change the way of the qustion to fit the answer.

Essays should be no less than 2, no more than three pages in length and should adhere to APA formatting guidelines: 12-point font, double-spaced, one-inch margins on all sides, cover page (Running head/assigned title – centered) and page numbers on upper right hand corner. Add the reference page to the end of the paper. You do not need an abstract in the autobiographies.

Questions listed after each topic are intended to stimulate thought and do not need to be completely answered. However, students must respond to all BOLDED questions.

The point of the assignment: relate each topic to yourself. A learning tool for this process will incorporate use of the readings and videos related to the topics. Each essay is worth 25 points and will be graded by the rubric listed below.

Discussion:

Chapter 13, in your text, details the characteristics of, and procedures for, School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS). You discovered that SWPBS is an “alternative to traditional reactive behavior strategies” that were based upon a “hierarchy of rules and consequences” (Shepherd & Linn, 2014, p. 266). While rules and consequences are included in SWPBS, this approach takes a “proactive, positive” approach designed to promote acceptable” behavior in all students (Shepherd & Linn, 2014, p. 266).

You also learned that there are many evidence-based social skill programs that can be incorporated into the SWPBS program. Culturally-responsive social skills programs can reduce interfering behaviors that result from cultural and linguistic differences.

Using your knowledge of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) and evidence-based social skills programs, discuss the following:

1. Explain how students who are at risk for behavior problems can be identified for placement in the three tiers of SWPBS. Include the following in your discussion:
   1. Office referrals
   2. Teacher nomination
   3. Continuous progress monitoring

1. List the three assessment tools that can be used to identify students who may not exhibit externalizing behaviors but who are also at risk for behavior problems. Detail the characteristics of each assessment.
2. Discuss “Wraparound Services” in terms of the following:
   1. Alignment with the Ecological Systems Model
   2. Those who are included in the “team”
   3. The focus of the services
   4. The advantages of using the school as an “entry point” for services

Guided Response Posts:

In your first response to a peer, list the five steps to implementing Tier 1 of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS). Design three rules that you would implement in your classroom and the reinforcer(s) for compliance with the rules and the consequence(s) for non-compliance.

In your second response to a peer, select a social skills program (Chapter 14 of your text) that you would implement in the Behavior Education Program in Tier 2 of the School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) program and explain the major components of the program. Select from the following: Skillstreaming; ACCEPTS; ACCESS; Stop and Think; Replacement Behavior Training; Social Stories; or Videotherapy.

The course concept essay should be 1000 words in length and is to be on one of the below topics/concepts. Please use only one of the 4 topics below. You should write a paper about one of the 4 topics below that explain what the topic/concept is and then provide a corresponding example. Be sure to write arguments for and against the topic, not your example. Please use the rubric below. This is to be turned in via Canvas on Oct 4th and will not be accepted via email or in person.
