Prehistoric Art
/0 Comments/in Humanities /by bonniejecintaQuestion Description
Can we see social change in art? Demonstrate the ability to identify changes in human culture through visual media and material culture from the ancient world. Find three examples of art, objects, or architecture that illustrate changes in human society in prehistory and the development of cities.
Step 1. Read or listen to the discussion of the Standard of Ur posted on D2L. Identify three indicators of changing social complexity that are examined in the Standard of Ur. These should be general and relatively abstract such as hierarchy, power, labor specialization, luxury, etc. These words may not appear directly in the text, so you may have to infer or interpret them. Once you identify an abstract idea that indicates changing social complexity, be sure to note down the page number because you will be returning to it later.
Step 2. This assignment asks you to analyze an idea by illustrating it with examples of objects. These illustrations should be from the same historical period as the text you read (i.e. prehistory and the Bronze Age, roughly 40,000 BCE to 1,000 BCE). These illustrations should represent the themes of the text as it relates to increasing social complexity and the origins of cities. To be certain you have appropriate images, I suggest using library databases such as Artstor (available through http://library.uco.edu – just search for “Artstor” and log in to view it). Each scavenger hunt requires three images from either art, objects, or architecture.
Note: I am not asking you to find images of the Standard of Ur. I am asking you to illustrate abstract concepts from the reading.
Step 3. Once you have selected your images, create a presentation in PowerPoint or Microsoft Word that does the following:
- Identifies what your image is of, including a name, date, and location where it was found
- Includes a brief two to three sentence explanation for how each image illustrates the concepts.
These sentences can be organized as a paragraph or in bullet points.
Step 4. This document should be uploaded to the D2L dropbox when complete. A submitted assignment that receives a grade of “A” will have clean writing, express insight that synthesizes image and text, and meet the minimum requirement of three images.

Memory Essay (A Short Memoir)
In the Life Story essay, you focused on diachronic identity shifts, for this essay, you will forge into a synchronic exploration of self (McAdams 102). By composing a very short memoir, based on one memory alone, you will gain an even greater awareness of your self-configuration. McAdams argues that in order to find “unity and purpose,” a person must conceive his/her life story both diachronically and synchronically (102).
McAdams explains, “A self-defining memory is a remembered episode from the past that is ‘vivid, affectively charged, repetitive, linked to other similar memories, and related to an important unresolved theme or enduring concern in an individual’s life’ (Singer & Salovey, 1993, p.13)” (108). For this assignment, you must deeply explore “a self-defining memory,” by way of memoir.
By recalling a self-defining memory with intricate detail, design, narrative and one inserted photograph, you examine your self and your personal history as well as configure a very intricate sensory piece of writing. You will learn to further connect with readers by way of vivid depiction and narrative scene (rhetorical strategies that will empower you professionally in all fields). You are encouraged to play with classic story elements like tension, dialogue and character. As you attempt to captivate and reveal, you will by default become more relatable with readers.
You are also required to include a one-page analytical reflection of your memoir where you might answer questions such as: How has this memory impacted my identity development? In what ways specifically? Am I the same person that I was in my memory? What has changed? What is the same? Do I see my present self in my memoir? Do I see my future self in it? How will this memory affect me going forward? What insight did I gain from this process?
Requirements:
One 4-page minimum memoir based on one memory (creative tone)
One 1-page minimum reflection (academic tone)
One use of McAdams quote in the reflection (well placed within context and analyzed)
Insertion of one related photograph anywhere in the essay

Discussion: Environmental and Biological Effects on Intelligence and Achievement
/0 Comments/in Humanities /by bonniejecintaQuestion Description
Intelligence tests are controversial, partly because they sometimes determine important aspects of people’s lives. For example, intelligence test scores have factored into determining school placement, identifying giftedness, and diagnosing mental retardation and learning disabilities. Even when an intelligence test shows that a child has normal intelligence, there might be speculation of a learning disability due to him or her falling behind in academic achievement. A child’s biology and environment influences his or her academic achievement, as well. Children from different cultures and socioeconomic status have diverse experiences, beliefs, and attitudes that affect their academic achievement. There are also differences in skills that caregivers emphasize during a child’s development that contribute to a child’s school readiness, which influences intelligence and academic achievement.
Intelligence and academic achievement are often used to determine many aspects of a person’s life, including the
For this Discussion, you will explore the differences between intelligence and academic achievement (as opposed to other types of achievement). You also will examine environmental and/or biological influences on intelligence and academic achievement.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Review this week’s Learning Resources related to intelligence and academic achievement and consider environmental and biological influences.
- Select two influences: environmental and/or biological (you can select two of either category or one of each) that have been associated with intelligence and academic achievement.
By Day 4
Post an explanation of the difference between intelligence and academic achievement. Then, briefly describe the two environmental and/or biological influences you selected. Explain the effects of each influence on intelligence and academic achievement. Be specific and provide examples from your Learning Resources. social democracy discussion
/0 Comments/in Humanities /by bonniejecintaQuestion Description
Socialism was started as a system to protect the laborer from the economic mechanisms of capitalism. Although it does not allow for citizens to reach the economic heights that they can here in the United States, it also is set up to guarantee that the citizens have certain services available to them at all times.
Consumerism
As you have learned in this section, there are several differences between socialist and capitalist economies. Among the most significant of these differences is the high level of consumerism that exists in capitalist countries. Americans, for example, spend 3 to 4 percent more of their time shopping than Europeans. This consumerism in the United States dates back several decades, when it reached new heights in the mid-twentieth century. The trend even received something of an official sanction in 1953 when Arthur Burns, the Chairman of the Economic Advisors Council under President Eisenhower, said that the American economy’s ultimate purpose is to produce more consumer goods.
Consumerism received a further boost from advertisements on television, a new medium that exploded in popularity in the 1950s. In the decades that followed, television commercials, radio spots, magazines, newspapers, and, in recent years, the Internet bombarded consumers with advertisements for an endless array of products. The average American views 3,000 ads in a single day. These advertisements have proven highly effective at creating a desire among the public to buy goods and services in ever increasing amounts. Economists have estimated that consumer spending accounts for 70% of the U.S. economy.
Go online and research social democracy, including some specific examples of how it works in various countries, and then consider the following discussion questions:
- What examples, such as health care, social security or employment, can you give that may work better in a socialist nation than a capitalist one? What about in a capitalist nation over a socialist one?
- Which system do you feel protects the freedoms of the individual better? Given an example.
- As you prepare for life outside of high school, whether it be a job or college, which economic system would you prefer to be a part of right now? Support your answer.
ONLY NEED A SHORT 100-150 WORD ANSWER.

MAIN POST
For this discussion, choose one of the following two readings:
- Option 1 – Elbow, P. (2014). Freewriting. In G.H. Muller (Ed.), The McGraw-Hill Reader: Issues Across the Disciplines pp. 105-108. New York. NY: McGraw-Hill.
- p. 108, “Writing,” Question 4: Writing an Argument: Write [a response] in which you support or discourage the act of freewriting.
- Be sure to quote and cite Elbow when writing your response.
- Option 2 – Martin, S. (2014) Writing is easy. In G.H. Muller (Ed.), The McGraw-Hill Reader: Issues Across the Disciplines pp. 114-117. New York. NY: McGraw-Hill.
- p. 117, “Writing,” Question 3: Writing an Argument: Argue for or against the proposition that one must find the ideal place (“Location, Location, Location,” as Martin calls it) in order to write effectively.
- Be sure to quote and cite Martin when writing your response.
First, read the article carefully. Answer the question associated with the reading. (100+ words)
Second, after answering the selected question, identify what the prompt was asking of you as a writer. Using the video above, identify what the best rhetorical mode would be to respond to the prompt. Support your ideas with direct support from each reading. Recall that direct support means using a quote. The quote should be integrated into your own ideas. An example can be found here. Make sure that you provide a proper citation. (100+ words)
Third, we want you to do more than just answer a question. Think about what the author is suggesting you do in your writing. How will you apply these ideas to your own writing process? Give concrete and specific examples. (100+ words)
PEER REPLIES
- In 100-150 words, respond to two peers’ main posts. Examine whether the post clearly supports the peer’s ideas about what the chosen prompts are asking, if the chosen rhetorical modes are correct, and if the ideas presented are properly supported.
REQUIREMENTS
- Main post is due by Wednesday at 11:59 PM Eastern. No credit will be awarded for late posts without instructor approval.
- Peer posts should be posted on a different day from the main post and no later than Sunday at 11:59 PM Eastern.
- Use objective point of view only rather than subjective. (See page G-8 for an explanation.)
write one page summary following the steps provided below
/0 Comments/in Humanities /by bonniejecintaQuestion Description
Write a summary of the assigned reading – “Binge Drinking Must Be Stopped” by Henry Wechsler (1 page) (10%)
Steps to follow when writing a summary:
- Read the assigned text first for general meaning. Follow the writer’s meaning, trying to see the issue from the writer’s perspective and adopt the writer’s values and belief system.
- (optional) Read the argument slowly a second time writing in the margins brief does and says statements for each paragraph or group of closely connected paragraphs. A does statement identifies a paragraph’s function, such as “summarizes an opposing view,” “introduces a supporting reason,” or ”gives and example.” A says statement summarizes a paragraph’s main point.
- (optional) Examine your does and says statements to determine the major sections of the argument, and create a list of major points and sub-points. If you are visually oriented, you may prefer to make a diagram of the article.
- Turn your list or diagram into a prose summary. You can do it in two ways:
- join all the says statements into a lengthy summary and then prune it,
- start with a one-sentence summary of the argument’s thesis and the major supporting reasons and then gradually develop it a little with more supporting ideas.
- Anyway, if you explain the most important points, use the same proportion of coverage and emphasis as the original and be neutral, objective, and accurate. You may use quotations, but keep them short.
- Exercise critical thinking; do not simply repeat what you have read, but present the relationship between the main ideas.
- Always give the complete title of your text and the name of the author in full when you first refer to them. Assume that the reader of your summary is not familiar with the text you are summarizing.
- Make sure you are using strong verbs for the major points like argues, contends, claims, etc. as opposed to suggests, hints, etc.
- Do not judge the text; avoid “the author clearly states,” etc. Do not give your opinions.
- Use attributive tags all the time – expressions like“The author says,” “According to Smith,” or “In the author’s opinion,” etc.
- Revise your summary until it is the desired length and is sufficiently clear, concise, and complete.
