Assignment Selection Process

Question Description

Assignment: The Selection Process

The process involved with selecting the “right” employee will differ depending on the requirements of the job. In addition, the culture and expectations of an organization will have great impact on the structure of the selection process. Where one health care setting might require applicants to participate in group interviews, another might use personality tests. In addition, the qualities for which interviewers look might also vary, ranging from a personality focus to a skills focus.

In this Assignment, you investigate the selection process that is used in a health care organization with which you are familiar. You also identify the expectations of both human resources and the nurse manager in terms of selection.

To prepare

  • Review Chapter 6, “Selecting New Employees” in the course text, Human Resource Management: Functions, Applications, Skill Development, to examine the various selection processes health care settings and other organizations may employ. In addition, reflect upon the three types of “fit” nurse managers should take into consideration when selecting new employees.
  • Identify a position that is open or has recently been filled in your organization.
  • Using what you know about the position, the culture and expectations of the organization, your own hiring and selection experiences, and this week’s readings, investigate the following:
    • Identify the selection steps that have been or will be taken, as well as the members involved. For example, which steps did human resources complete? In which steps did the nursing manager engage?
    • Identify the skills, educational and work background, and “fit” required for this position. How do these align with the advertised job description?
    • Identify any problems or areas that could be improved in your organization’s current selection process. If you were the nurse manager, how would you modify this process?

Note: If possible, you may also choose to discuss these ideas with an HR professional or nurse manager in your organization.

To complete

By Day 7

Submit a 3- to 5-page paper in which you do the following:

  • Briefly describe the selection process used in your setting.
    • Identify the team members involved in conducting each step. For example, explain which steps HR performs and which steps managers perform.
      • Explain how effective you believe the current system is.
      • Briefly describe any problems (e.g., rushing, stereotyping, “like me” syndrome, halo and horn effect, premature selection) your setting has experienced with this current selection system (if applicable).
      • Explain how you would modify the process and why.
  • Identify the job title for the open or recently filled position.
    • Describe the skills and background a desirable applicant would have.
    • Describe the type of “fit” that would make this applicant the “right” person for this specific job.
  • Compare the job description with the expectations of the position.
    • Explain whether or not the job description aligns with the skills, background, and “fit” needed to excel in this position.
    • Explain the specific attributes or characteristics you, as the nurse manager responsible for selecting a candidate for the position, might seek that are not specifically outlined in the job description. Describe how you could you elicit this information during an interview.

Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available at http://writingcenter.waldenu.edu/57.htm). All papers submitted must use this formatting.

Evidence-Based Project

Question Description

Is there a difference between “common practice” and “best practice”?

When you first went to work for your current organization, experienced colleagues may have shared with you details about processes and procedures. Perhaps you even attended an orientation session to brief you on these matters. As a “rookie,” you likely kept the nature of your questions to those with answers that would best help you perform your new role.

Over time and with experience, perhaps you recognized aspects of these processes and procedures that you wanted to question further. This is the realm of clinical inquiry.

Clinical inquiry is the practice of asking questions about clinical practice. To continuously improve patient care, all nurses should consistently use clinical inquiry to question why they are doing something the way they are doing it. Do they know why it is done this way, or is it just because we have always done it this way? Is it a common practice or a best practice?

In this Assignment, you will identify clinical areas of interest and inquiry and practice searching for research in support of maintaining or changing these practices. You will also analyze this research to compare research methodologies employed.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
  • Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest.
  • Review the results of your peer-reviewed research and reflect on the process of using an unfiltered database to search for peer-reviewed research.
  • Reflect on the types of research methodologies contained in the four relevant peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Part 1: An Introduction to Clinical Inquiry

Create a 4- to 5-slide PowerPoint presentation in which you do the following:

  • Identify and briefly describe your chosen clinical issue of interest.
  • Describe how you used keywords to search on your chosen clinical issue of interest.
  • Identify the four research databases that you used to conduct your search for the peer-reviewed articles you selected.
  • Provide APA citations of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Part 2: Identifying Research Methodologies

After reading each of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected, use the Matrix Worksheet template to analyze the methodologies applied in each of the four peer-reviewed articles. Your analysis should include the following:

  • The full citation of each peer-reviewed article in APA format.
  • A brief (1-paragraph) statement explaining why you chose this peer-reviewed article and/or how it relates to your clinical issue of interest, including a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest.
  • A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article.
  • A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the research methodology used. Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific.
  • A brief (1- to 2-paragraph) description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Patient Preferences and Decision Making

Question Description

Changes in culture and technology have resulted in patient populations that are often well informed and educated, even before consulting or considering a healthcare need delivered by a health professional. Fueled by this, health professionals are increasingly involving patients in treatment decisions. However, this often comes with challenges, as illnesses and treatments can become complex.

What has your experience been with patient involvement in treatment or healthcare decisions?

In this Discussion, you will share your experiences and consider the impact of patient involvement (or lack of involvement). You will also consider the use of a patient decision aid to inform best practices for patient care and healthcare decision making.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on a time when you experienced a patient being brought into (or not being brought into) a decision regarding their treatment plan.
  • Review the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute’s Decision Aids Inventory at https://decisionaid.ohri.ca/.
    • Choose “For Specific Conditions,” then Browse an alphabetical listing of decision aids by health topic.

NOTE: To ensure compliance with HIPAA rules, please DO NOT use the patient’s real name or any information that might identify the patient or organization/practice.

Post a brief description of the situation you experienced and explain how incorporating or not incorporating patient preferences and values impacted the outcome of their treatment plan. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how including patient preferences and values might impact the trajectory of the situation and how these were reflected in the treatment plan. Finally, explain the value of the patient decision aid you selected and how it might contribute to effective decision making, both in general and in the experience you described. Describe how you might use this decision aid inventory in your professional practice or personal life.

Assignment 7 HA 604

Question Description

In the healthcare industry, most provider organizations have market power because their competitors aren’t considered a perfect substitute. In addition, limited competition in the marketplace contributes to a rise in the market power, which, in turn, allows a firm to increase its’ markups over the marginal cost and boost profit margins. Barriers to entry and regulations are other factors that can increase a firm’s market power. If you haven’t noticed, the determinants of market power align fairly well with Michael Porter’s Five Forces Analysis. When discussing market power, it’s important to take into consideration the market structure (e.g., monopolies, monopolistic competitors, and oligopolies), since the market structure will have an impact on market power and a firm’s profit potential. The government through policy development and new regulations has a profound impact of the healthcare market. These governmental interventions may result in tax breaks and subsidies intended to promote operational and clinical efficiencies; promote greater accessibility to healthcare services for those underserved segments of the population; increase accountability for cost containment measures and better utilization of limited resources; and reimbursement incentives for meeting quality metrics.

It’s important that healthcare leaders understand that there are clear linkages between market structure, market power, and profits, since these factors tend to influence financial, operational, clinical, and strategic decision-making within the healthcare and related industries. In addition, this unit will also explore the impact that governmental incentives and regulations have on the imperfect market that typifies the healthcare industry. To gain a deeper appreciation for these economic concepts and their relevance to the healthcare and related industries, you will be expected to complete the following end-of-chapter problem and mini-cases:

Chapter 15: Case 15.1, Deregulation Pharmaceutical Advertising (pp. 249-251; Lee textbook); 15.2 (p. 252)
Chapter 16: Case 16.2, To Vaccinate or Not (p. 263; Lee textbook)

Unit Learning Outcomes

ULO 1. Examine the importance of market power. (CLO 1, 6, and 7)
ULO 2. Apply Porter’s model to pricing. (CLO 1, 3, 6, and 7)
ULO 3. Evaluate the impact of policies and regulations on market power. (CLO 3)
ULO 4. Examine factors that contribute to inefficient and imperfect markets. (CLO 2, 3, 6, and 7)

Directions

The students are expected to carefully read the assignment instructions, then thoroughly and explicitly address each question. Microsoft Excel will be used to perform the mathematical computations and graphs; however, the problem and its corresponding response should be written up in a Microsoft Word document. Your responses to the assigned mini-case studies should also be included in the same document. IMPORTANT: Make certain that there is a detailed description of how the calculations were performed. You will also need to include an interpretation of the results. While there is no minimum number of references that need to be utilized to support the completion of this assignment, it is generally understood that outside sources, including the text, will be necessary to complete the problems. The document must adhere to the APA writing style in terms of using in-text citations and the listing of sources on the references page. The Microsoft Word document and Excel spreadsheet are to be uploaded under the correct unit assignment page.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) v. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc.

Collapse

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) v. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc.

The purpose of this discussion is to highlight a discrimination case and briefly explain how the events impacted the work environment. A description of the application of Title VII legislation in regards to the protected religious class will be discussed. Religion, most notably religious clothing, has been more of an influencing concern for both employers and employees in today’s workplace (Lussier & Hendon, 2018). The conclusion of this post will engage mitigation for a religious fashion request presented to the writer while leading a clinical class on a nursing unit.

EEOC v. Retail

The bottom line of this case involved determining if a middle manager asked the potential employee if her hajib ( a Muslim woman’s headscarf) was an instrument of her religion. If the question was asked then, Abercrombie & Fitch, the retail company had no right, under Title VII to deny employment; but the issue was not presented, and therefore the woman could be denied employment without discriminatory retribution. The case was first found in favor of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) but then “in October 2013, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit reversed the district court’s ruling and remanded the case because it found conflicting evidence on both sides regarding whether Abercrombie needed to initiate an interactive dialogue with [the potential employee] about the possible conflict of the work policy with her religious practices” (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., 2013).

The critical legal issue involved was that the religious headscarf should have been discussed and therefore was not intended as a source of not hiring the candidate. Policies of companies need to be addressed as in this case, the middle manager should have inquired to both the candidate and to a human resource manager (HRM) for the correct and legal way to address the issue.

Strategy Proposal

While employed as an adjunct professor for a Nursing School, it was during the clinical sessions that a student began to wear different forms of handmade bracelets. After inquiring why she was wearing bracelets after the class was informed of a strict uniform code which included no bracelets or rings, other then a wedding band, the student stated she was becoming a pastor in her church and part of the induction involved the making and wearing of these bracelets. A compromise was met when she agreed to wear the bracelets around her ankles. Gratefully her church and our school did not have to involve lawyers for the outcome since a degree of emotional intelligence was used by both parties (Manion, 2011).

Week 6: Mental Health Clinical Presentation – Part 1

Question Description

TOPIC: GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER

For Week 6 of the course there will not be a case study given to you by the faculty. Instead you will be assigned a mental health disorder commonly seen in primary care and you will create a case study based on that disorder. You may create a case study either from a previous clinical patient experience or if you have not had a patient in clinical that represents your assigned topic you may research your disease using the week’s classroom material and the evidence-based literature in the field. The case should be clear and include all elements of a normal case that might be presented in class (subjective, objective, assessment, and full 5 point plan).  The clinical practicum documentation will be helpful for this process, or notes you have taken in clinical regarding cases.  The case should be clear, organized, and meet the following guidelines

This part goes in part one and should begin with subjective and objective data just like we do in your weekly case study discussion.  Do not put diagnosis until your peers respond.

WEEK 6 Part One Specific Guidelines:

If this is an actual patient from clinical- Include their actual chief complaint, demographic data, HPI, PMHX, PSHX, medications, allergies, subjective and objective findings without identifying the patient’s name.

If this is a fictitious case you’ve created from the literature/readings you should design an example patient and include chief complaint, demographic data, HPI, PMHX, PSHX, medications and allergies, subjective and objective findings. Be mindful that the background data for the case should bear some relevance to the diagnosis.

The case should not be overly simple. Like your weekly case studies, it should include subjective data that loosely represents the diagnosis you have been given, but includes some elements of the pathophysiology/presentation of the disease.

You must include the following elements in part one: subjective: chief complaint/HPI, demographic data, HPI, PMHX, PSHX, subjective and objective findings.

Post contributes clinically accurate perspectives/insights applicable to the results from the physical exam and diagnoses. Initial post includes the most likely diagnosis/specific treatment plan given case study information supported by rationale and answers all questions presented in the case. Demonstrates course knowledge/assigned readings by: linking tests/interventions accurately to diagnoses, applies learned knowledge specifically to the symptoms and patient information using original dialogue i.e., little to no direct quotes.

Discussion post supported by evidence from appropriate sources published within the last five years. Focus of journal articles represents a logical link between the article content and the case study information. In-text citations and full references are provided.

Discussion post presented in a logical, meaningful, and understandable sequence. Headings reflect separation of criterion outlined in assignment guidelines.

**Direct quote should not exceed 15 words & must add substantively to the discussion

Discussion post has minimal grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation and APA* errors. Direct quotes (if used) is limited to 1 short statement** which adds substantively to the post.

* APA style references and in text citations are required; however, there are no deductions for errors in indentation or spacing of references. All elements of the reference otherwise must be included.

PICOT Statement Paper

Question Description

Review the Topic Materials and the work completed in NRS-433V to formulate a PICOT statement for your capstone project.

A PICOT starts with a designated patient population in a particular clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. The intervention should be an independent, specified nursing change intervention. The intervention cannot require a provider prescription. Include a comparison to a patient population not currently receiving the intervention, and specify the timeframe needed to implement the change process.

Formulate a PICOT statement using the PICOT format provided in the assigned readings. The PICOT statement will provide a framework for your capstone project.

In a paper of 500-750 words, clearly identify the clinical problem and how it can result in a positive patient outcome.

Make sure to address the following on the PICOT statement:

  1. Evidence-Based Solution
  2. Nursing Intervention
  3. Patient Care
  4. Health Care Agency
  5. Nursing Practice

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style

PROFESSORS NOTES

  • Week 3 PICOT paper: this paper has two parts, one part is your PICOT statement, for this aspect please just write out your one sentence PICOT at the beginning of your paper, start your paper with your PICOT sentence and then provide an overview of what your problem is, why it is important to focus on your problem and how changing the problem will improve outcomes. Ensure you use citations/references to back up your overview of your problem, no citations needed for the one sentence PICOT PICOT
    • PICOT is a nursing focused intervention question. It is not a traditional research question (an example of a traditional research question would be ‘How does the introduction of weekly journal clubs impact the understanding and use of Evidence Based Practice). A PICOT question is also not based in medical interventions (a medical intervention is anything you would need a provider order for, for example do not use medication or surgical interventions or other interventions outside the scope of the nurse. Remember no medical interventions (prescriptions, medications, surgical interventions etc.) are allowed in the PICOT it must be a nursing intervention. The focus can be on patient care or improving the profession or improving any aspect of the role of nursing.
    • PICOT: Problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time
    • Examples: Here is a great PICOT ‘For patients with a risk of sepsis in the ICU does a sepsis assessment tool help with early diagnosis compared to patients who do not have a specified sepsis assessment done over the course of six months). Here is another great PICOT ‘Many nurses experience incivility between peers, does the introduction of a civility education module in orientation decrease incidents of incivility as compared to those who completed orientation prior to the module’ (note there is no time here because it would be an ongoing intervention). Here is a bad PICOT ‘Chemo patients get severe nausea, does the introduction of Benadryl and Inapsine decrease their nausea as compared to traditional prescriptions for nausea’ -this question is medical interventions, you only want nursing interventions, here is another bad PICOT ‘Patients get sepsis, should a sepsis assessment tool be used’ -this question is missing many aspects
